Thunder 102 Shamless

wirelessinnepa said:
Where are you writing in from ironman? Do you reside anywhere in the listening area of Thunder 102? Former employee maybe? Just from looking at the website, it looks like Thunder has done the "Thunder Country Blood Bowl" 3 years running. Looks like they are currently promoting the YMCA and the Red Cross on their website too. What's your station doing? What are YOU personally doing? Ever worked at a radio station?

Personal? Nah...not for me...I don't even know the folks at Thunder 102...never been in Sullivan County, NY actually...just my observation that a person who throws stones at another's efforts at charity, especially from a perch of anonymity, has a lot to learn...and it has nothing to do with radio.

Why don't you sign your name so we all know who's opinion this really is?

Ben;
Sounds like you'd defend them no matter what. You checked out their website impressive "WOW" I believe in charity events, But again COMMUNITY FIRST" You want an argument, but I’m entitled to "MY OPINION". Or maybe your kissing up for a job with them, or are employed with them at one of their sister stations, whatever. I will no longer entertain you. Go back to Tunkhannock, PA or wherever your station is from

Actually, I am managing partner/owner of WGMF, WNKZ and WZKN....have had interaction over the years with the ownership of that station on an owner's level a few times, but only about as much as you would with any peer in your field. Definitely not kissing anyone's butt for a weekend DJ job.

My only axe to grind is against the idea that somehow a radio station shouldn't help starving people in dire need, or that it has some sort of ulterior motive. That's BS ironman. It wouldn't be wrong for them to raise money for people in Sullivan County, NY in light of the tragedy in Haiti, either....because it's RIGHT to help PEOPLE....Americans or otherwise.

And again, who are you? And what do you do for charity, either local or otherwise?

Quite happy in Tunkhannock, PA doing local radio.

And just to clarify, when I said I don't know the people at that radio station, I meant the staff members who worked hard to pull off the charity event. Have met the people in ownership two or three times.

Fire away.

No. There are two Ben Smiths....the other Ben Smith must have worked with Paul...the other Ben Smith was the PD of Rock 107 back in the 80's....I was in elementary and middle school in the 80's.....

Wait now. I thought the Ben Smith with Kevin Fitzgerald was that same Ben Smith who knew this Cileberto guy. Are you his son? What stations, if any have you worked at in the WB/Scranton.

Amazing coincidence. The Ben Smith who was with Kevin Fitzgerald before is not related to me. I am from Corning, NY...I think Ben Smith "senior" is from Scranton.

At one point in time I took over for Ben on WPHD in Elmira as the morning show guy...the station had simulcasted WKGB from Binghamton in certain dayparts, and this morning show was a new thing for the station. Since his name was Ben Smith, 45 seconds before I went on the air the very first time on that station, the PD suggested I come up with a different name...nervous as I was to be on a new station as a relatively new jock. In a pinch and with seconds to spare, I came up with the name Ben Benjamin, which morphed into Gentle Ben (so dubbed by Glen Pitcher, now morning king on WHWK Binghamton)...which I am no longer known as.

Several years later, Ben Smith did the afternoon show on the same station and I did the night show.

Every so often there would be a question from the payroll dept....we had to make sure to use our middle initials for payroll purposes.

But no relation.

Several times a year at one of the stations I get one of our employees who comes into my office and says, "Ben, there's a long lost friend of yours on the phone...he says he worked with you at such and so station....and then the caller and I have a good laugh while I tell these stories and explain that there are actually two of us.
