Thursday Night Football and its affect on syndicated programming

I think it will have a greater effect on Wheel and Jeopardy as, I do believe, more NBC affiliates carry those, and generally in the post newscast/pre-prime time frame where TNF would begin. They'd likely be cleared after midnight leading to lower ratings in key markets with some notable impact to their aggregate ratings.

As those are among the most highly rated syndicated shows, this shift might have a more noticeable impact on syndicated ratings this year.

One thing I haven't seen the answer to is will one network carry the first part of the season and the other network the last part, or will they stagger games and carry it every other week?

NBC WEEK 1
CBS 2-3
NFL 4
CBS 5-7
NFL 8-10
NBC 11
BOTH on 12 (turkey day)
NBC 13-16

Whenever WXIA bumps Jeopardy! at 7:30 PM for any reason (special programming, news/weather alerts), sister station WATL (My Network TV) will pick it up. WATL usually steps in to carry NBC shows in case WXIA bumps them for such occasions.

There are 3 games on Turkey Day
early game CBS
mid afternoon on FOX
night game on NBC

Therefore both networks have a game on that Thursday :)
(all you have to do is go to the NFL site and look at schedule. Thats how I got this info) ;)

So NBC would have the TNF branded game for that week even though the others are carrying games on that day.

That means they are splitting 12 games.

I think it's great that TNF is becoming more available OTA.

I believe it was posted here before that the first Thursday night game that is the kickoff of the season and the Thanksgiving game are considered part of the Sunday night package for NBC. So not counting them that would be 5 Thursday night games each on CBS and NBC.

But in reality this will give NBC an advantage of having 2 more games on Thursday nights. I'd think that should be changed by giving the first game of the season to one network and the Thanksgiving night game to the other. Since CBS usually has the Detroit game on Thanksgiving day perhaps NBC should keep the Thanksgiving night game and give CBS the first game of the season, or switch between the two each year.

So I will only have the NBC affiliate for "Jeopardy" on Thursdays for the first part of the season and only the CBS affiliate later.

The CBS affiliate's record for airing delayed shows in the middle of the night is not impressive. My oldest TiVo will record when told to. My newest one seems helpless because two stations air the show and all I can do is manually record at the usual time.

i know this whole topic of Thursday Night Football games being discussed, but if i was in charge of the NFL, i would make a minor change with the games that air on Cable.

i would make Monday Night Football be split up for 2 networks, a select amount of games will air on ABC/ESPN together as a simulcast similar to the Thursday Night Football simulcast between NFL Network and CBS and now NBC. the biggest most important must watch games of the Monday Night Football TV season will air on ESPN and Simulcast on ABC in all markets like for example, it's Cowboys vs. Redskins or Super Bowl winner vs. divisional rival, those games will air on ABC and ESPN live at the same time and the games that aren't really must watch, like example Cleveland Browns vs. Jacksonville Jaguars will only air on ESPN and local ABC station in Cleveland and Jacksonville, FL TV markets.

it would depend on what games have a historic record of high ratings or bad ratings to decide what games airs on ABC Simulcast games and what will be ESPN excursive games. also not to mention the Games that will air on both ABC and ESPN will be start much earlier then the games that air only on ESPN, and on the first Monday of the regular season in the the NFL, the early game airs on ABC while the late game airs on ESPN and can start a little earlier to avoid a situation where if the early game goes why past the allow time and the late game starts, that would mean they won't have to move the late game on ESPN 2 or ESPNEWS until the early game is finished.

MNF ran too late which led to its demise. There is a big tradeoff, as a 8PM game start makes it awfully early on the West Coast, but the earlier start is better I think. It's for six weeks, one night a week. Better this than having these games locked up on the NFL Network.
It's demise ON ABC !!! Lest you forget, it continues to this day on ESPN :)

Cheers & 73 :)

And more than likely KTVD 20 will do the same thing here in Denver. Carrying 9NEWS @ 6:00 PM followed by ET (And that ASSUMES they even wanna bother with the 6:00 PM newscast at all OR the airing of ET at 6:30 PM since it has a repeat during the late night hours)

Big question is what will KARE 11 do (It doesn't have the benefit of having another station to dump its news & other shows like KUSA & WXIA do)

Cheers & 73 :)

When you mentioned both on Thanksgiving, was that counting the daytime games from Dallas and Detroit, or are there 2 prime time games on CBS and NBC? Thanks.
No. Just one game. Dallas & Detroit will still be seen on CBS & FOX as per tradition

Cheers & 73 :)

That can't be done because that would require permission from the NFL (Which they're not likely to give)

Plus, ABC affiliates on the West Coast fought the network FOR DECADES to get their 5:00 PM Monday evening newscasts on a year-round. Are you saying they should now GO BACK to that ?? No way

Finally it cuts off the syndication revenue BOTH ESPN & the NFL (Who DOES get a cut) get from the MNF syndcation rights (Which is why the NFL would say NO even if Disney supported it)

This is just impractical. Why do you think ESPN only does t ONCE a year & dropped late MLB games MANY MOONS AGO ??

Why do you want TV to rehash the past or do the impossible ?? Heck, why doesn't the NFL put its games on CBS Sports Network, Spike TV, MTV, NBC SN, USA Network, TNT, TBS or Fox Sports 1 ?? How 'bout CNBC, TruTV & MSNBC while they're at it too ??

Why not shoot for MyNet, PBS & The CW as well ??

And for online viewing, they can stick 'em on ESPN 3 & CBS N too

Ya that's the ticket.....

Cheers & 73 :D

They dont have to do anything. They use to have ET on at 6:30 but they decided to create some crappy 6:30 "news" type thing called Breaking the News where they take a couple news stories and go "in depth" about it 16 ways from Sunday.

They moved ET to 4:30 which bumped Jeopardy to 3:30 (they now have an hour Jeopardy..1st the daytime one then the "new" one)

But anyways 2 years ago with the Olympics, KARE just put their syndicated stuff (Rachel, Oz, ET, Jeopardy) on their Weathernation subchannel (11.2)

Meanwhile on CBS (WCCO) Wheel will just get shown at 1:07ish after the replay of the 10:00 news. Last year when the Vikes were on TNF late in the season and WCCO had the local rights (it was a NFL exclusive game) they moved prime time to their Decades sub for the night and had no late night replay.
