Ticket trouble

Mike Rhyner apparently had a blow up with management today. He tweeted that in 18+ years he's never been as angry with the station as he is right now.

Did you listen today? The Hardline had a remote and were off the air for 2 hours.

That 120 minutes of airtime was filled with 5 minutes of Danny trying to communicate on a bad cell connection, 5 minutes of Danny bitching about it, and 110 minutes of Rotten Radio.

Rhyner would have every reason to be pissed. Thank goodness Rhyner's dead.

Might have been a remote gone bad, but still more listenable than Rage.

Somehow I bet this has more to do with THAT company running off a lot of their good help. What happens when the support guys at a group like promotions people and engineering either get cut or get pissed and leave? Well, my friends, you get EXACTLY what happened recently on the Ticket. It turns into a major CF.

What the assclowns that run these big groups don't fully grasp is most of the "behind the scenes" folks weren't really happy with the way radio was headed before. As things get even nastier, there is little left worth staying for. Look for a lot more threads to start showing even in major markets as the talent pool finds other jobs outside of radio.

And that's what it's all about.

CumeLess, not a "happy place" to work it certainly appears. Time for the Dickeys to cue up some cute new ads on their stations to recruit some new victims... uh... help for those nice radio stations they own...

The simple case is this....

Based on consistent and demonstrated conduct....Endemic to the entire management culture........As far as On-Air Personalities, and Support Personnel are concerned....

In my professional opinion:

Cumulus Broadcasting is not a fit place to work.

This is not a bitter statement from a disgruntled employee. In fact, Cumulus gave me the biggest break of my career; one I will always be grateful for.

No....This is a professional assessment from a 38-year On-Air Broadcaster with skins on the wall....Including 4 Shares at the station I worked for them in Market #5.

There is no reason....Not even desperation....That should cause any On-Air Broadcaster to believe that there is any possible path to continuing success at that company....And therefore any reason to either contemplate, or continue employment with Cumulus Broadcasting.

Further, if you are currently employed at Cumulus in one of the On-Air or Product Disciplines, at any level, in any market....You're continuing employment is tenuous....at best.

Make other arrangements....Quickly.

That's my opinion.

Don't they have contracts that expire this year? While I hope it never happens, it seems like things are starting to happen that may cause big changes at the little ticket.

I agree with Jon-David Wells. I have never worked for them but I can tell you from good people that have, they are beyond sucking. Honestly, they are everything that people think Clear Channel could possibly be in the negative category. CC isn't good at all in most cases, but honestly Cumeless takes "the cake". I will come short of saying that no one can be as bad as they are (because I'm sure there is, nationwide, someone worse) but of the larger groups they ARE the worst. My only hope is their stocks will crash and do it fast enough that less people will get hurt in the process. It's not IF but when they'll follow the very company they swallowed up called Citadel. At least they had some idea that programming could translate into dollars in some markets. Cumeless doesn't even seem to get that much.

Thanks for sharing, JD. Good insight.

Congratulations Dan Bennett & Cumulus. Your motives for this business and for the companies you've recently taken over are becoming increasingly clear. And what's sad about all of this? You will be allowed to declare bankruptcy when you screw up so badly that there is no turning back. Off the hook. Protected by our Government, your buddies. Like all other 1%-ers who have more money than they know what to do with, that think it's "fun" to "play radio".

Please do not mistake my realism for bitterness. At this point, I've known way too many good, hard working people that have been screwed over by you...for the sake of you making a few extra bucks. I hope it's been worth it. Shame on you.

Exactly....

So how do we; On-Air Broadcasters, hasten that (obviously planned-for) inevitability?

Well...Again, just in my humble opinion:

BY NOT WORKING FOR THESE PEOPLE. EVER, or EVER AGAIN..

The best part of the solution described above is this:

Cumulus Management, across the board, truly believes that On-Air Talent is unnecessary to their success.

All we; On-Air Broadcasting Professionals have to do to contribute to their demise, is give them exactly what they want:

Radio Stations as inhuman and cheap as their Corporate Ethos.

Wait....It gets even better:

The quicker things implode for the Cumulus Stock Game, the faster:

  • The Dickey Brothers, and their minions, can abandon this near-transparent foolishness, cash-out and get on with their self-congratulatory, world bucket-list tour...
  • Their Investors can get on with reorganizing the remnants into several functioning Radio Groups...
  • And we; The On-Air Programming/Broadcasting experts can begin the work of restoring Radio to its rightful place in America's Electronic Media Landscape....at the Top.

why no Hardline today??? I just got in. I know its a holiday, but HL is usually on during holidays.. Could it have anything to do with the mess Friday

They gave everyone the day off.

I heard some of this on friday, it was a total disaster, which is another of a long list of problems in the cumulus era of Ticket ownership. I have a serious gut feeling theres going to be a mutiny at the friendly ticket very soon. My question is whom will pick up the pieces? KRLD? KESN? Perhaps another station will start up on the local airwaves or online? KTCK days are, sadly, numbered. I also feel for the other parties working for the local cluster as well, as the quality of product has gone south as well...If folks are smart, they're already looking for an exit..

Yes. Traditionally they have had to work Memorial Day and were given a comp day to use at a later date. Finally someone was smart enough to realize that no one listens during those days and gave them a holiday. Wonder if they'll do the same for July 4 and Labor Day.

I think you are all blowing this out of proportion and failing to realize the true culprit-Chimi's. Last time they had a remote at Chimi's Corby was off on a golf-takes-priority-over-the-show excursion and Rhyner was under the weather. David Moore and Rhads had to fill-in and they had technical difficulties as well. In fact, I think Moore won the e-brake b/c of something he did during the broadcast. Note to sales: don't sell remotes to Chimi's. It's like not ordering DirectTV.
