yawn... the ticket isnt a sports station.
And thats the key. 75% of what they program is "Guy Talk." You can go for long stretches on The Ticket and not hear anything that has to do with sports.Unfortunately "lowest common demominator" is an enormously successful programming strategy.

Do you actually listen to the station? Because I generally listen a healthy amount every day- as Rover said, it's probably the best radio in dallas...And most of the shows are pretty good about not doing more than 1 segment in a row, (MAYBE 2) of non sports...And they all seem preety good ad teasing what they're doing when- so if you don't wantto hear E-News, but DO want to hear teh HArdline talk Mavs, you know when they're doing it...And The 'they're not a sports station' comment begs the question- what's better, a sports station that's 'not (really) a sports station' but that has people listening to them, or a 'real' sports station that few people listen too? I always love people that bitch about commercial stations programming to 'the lowest common denominator'. Yeah, because it makes great buisness sense to be high-brow and lose money ::)

Mark this prediction:Cumulus will run The Ticket into the ground. They will penny pinch that thing to death, run off all the talent and make programming decisions that are counter to the history of the station (i.e.: the cowboys)Duly noted?

Amen, brutha! Cumu-less is all about less - less care and concern for their employees, less on-air quality for the listener and less money in every department - except in the higher-ups' bank accounts!

the point was is the ticket better competes with 105.3 than with ESPN radio... one would say 103.3 ESPN is in a niche since they are truly sports and not guy talk and fart jokes. plus look at the numbers from a year ago and look at 18-34 and 18-49... ESPN has gained a bit of share... this big picture - and please dont be a ticket fan boy... i bet ESPN gets a little kiss from the Mavericks run... the book will tell - and yes, Cumuless will run all the Sesq. stations in the ground...

Although I'm in Houston, I check out both The Ticket and ESPN 103.3 on frequent trips to DFW. :D

I wasn't bitching, just pointing out that often, to be successful in business, you have to hold your nose and give people what they want. ::)For instance, if I owned a chain of restaurants and my market research showed that diners preferred meals that tasted like vomit, you can be sure I'd have my chefs barf in the food as they prepared it. ;D

When I wanna hear sports, I tune into ESPN. I could give a rat's ass about someone's opinion of the Coldplay concert on a sports station. I'd listen to KDMX if I wanted to hear about that. The Ticket has been AWESOME at marketing themselves and talking about the "behind the scenes" stuff that make regular listeners feel they are in the loop. Much like Russ does. Once you get them THAT brainwashed, it's hard to lose the P-1s.

The Ticket is about sports when they have to be. During big games and events, like now it's 90% Maverick talk. But outside of that they're about entertaining thier listeners. That's what hurts ESPN. When there is nothing going on they're trying to cram sports subjects down listeners throats, segment after segment show after show and it gets boring and dull (even to the most hardcore sports fan). And if listeners aren't getting entertained they'll turn the dial.

You hit the nail on the head. It's about being entertaining. The Ticket's home base is sports- but they'll wander off the base paths to try to be entertaining- Where ESPN juststays on their predictable path- which is fine if you care about the failure of the middle of the Cincinatti Reds line up to produce runs, or care about the Ottawa Senators power play defecencies...To me, that's not entertaining- I'd much rather hear the Ticket guys not talk sports than hear about sports I could give a rat's *ss about...

Exactly...... that unique are rare ability of discernment.... I can't give you an exact definition of it . . . But.... I know it when it hear it ! !There's no way that I could listen to ESPN radio on a daily basis !I have a Life !! :D

ESPN Radio 103.3 is what you'd have come up with in 1985 before anyone had ever put an all-sports station on the air. It's a bunch of sports anchor types with a couple of newspaper writers thrown in. Not too impressive. It's the CNN Headline News of sports radio. Most of the people on the station are NOT inherently interesting conversationalists. And most are not very funny. The Ticket is doing radio. Good for them. Are there other ways to skin that cat? Sure. Could another sports station find different personalities who make us laugh and talk about sports and pop culture, etc.? Heck yeah! Is that station ESPN? Nope.

To each his own. There are plenty of guys that turn on ESPN TV the second they get home. Plenty of guys live & breathe sports. For them...ESPN 103.3 is miles better than the Ticket. If you wanna hear a bunch of other "We're so cool" talk amongst the hosts...then the Ticket's your station. I'm anxious to see how much the Cowboys will affect the Ticket's opinions. And I wonder if Galloway and Hansen will rip the Cowboys simply to rip them. Hansen's been grinding that axe for 10 years now. You have to think the Ticket will be a bit more restrained in their criticism.

There's a term for those people: gamblers. ;)
