Tieline Commander question

Need help on how to configure a Tieline Commander unit to be used on a VOIP line from Time-Warner Cable for a remote broadcast. Is this a digital line or what? (realizing that a digital phone line can destroy the unit)

Time Warner "Digital Phone" still uses an analog line emulator in the box on the premises. That way, standard house phones will work. This should not destroy the unit.

However, the Tieline probably will not work well (if at all) on a VoIP line. The Tieline has a modem in it that's similar to a computer, and the speech codecs that are typically used on VoIP do not pass modem calls or fax data very well, if at all. You need a real POTS line to make a POTS codec work properly.

If the location has Time Warner VoIP, maybe they have a high speed data connection available too. If that's the case, then an IP codec like an Access could be used. If you have a Commander G3, I think it has IP capability. A laptop with IP codec software could also be used.

Tieline Commander 3G units have an RJ-45 jack in the back of them for internet connectivity.

I have found that the hard-line internet IP codec is the best working function of this device. The 3G wireless codecs are so dependent on signal strength that any flux in your signal can cause you to drop out. I have also had better luck with POTS codecs made by Comrex than the one within the Tieline Commanders.

I LOVE our tie-line systems using the 3G card, most of the time if we have any speed problems it has to do with our connection to the studio unit. Like the rest i would suggest utilizing the audio over IP function vs the pots codex function of the unit. Do you have a fixed ip address available studio side for that unit?

Wow. Forgot about this thread so I apologize for answering months later...

Studio-side, the Tie-Line Commanders have a static IP. As I don't often setup the field internet connection (it's usually provided by whoever is holding the event... and is often a temporary rig) I assume it's a dynamic IP address. But that shouldn't matter (I don't think).

The 3G connections are very usable as long as the signal strength is good. I find that I need a "6" or higher (ranging from 1 to 9) in order to rest easy that my connection won't drop out or need to renegotiate.

I've skated by with the units' POTS codec... but like I said, I like Comrex's POTS codecs better. I've just had better luck with them.
