TikTok to consider producing TV shows

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...he-company-is-exploring-the-idea?srnd=premium

TikTok has discussed producing a reality TV show built around its namesake video app, according to two people familiar with the company’s plans, part of a drive to broaden its appeal and showcase different ways of using its videos.

TikTok has been approached by independent production companies with pitches, and has debated a few ideas for a show internally, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans are preliminary. The company, part of Chinese technology giant ByteDance, hasn’t decided on a format, a host or which talent will be involved.

This is about how Tik Tok can expand and their proposed plans though.

TikTok's popularity skyrocketed with the help of short, quirky dance and lip-syncing videos. Now the social media app is betting that live broadcasts and educational content will play a bigger part in its future.

Bryan Thoensen, who oversees content partnerships at TikTok, said that during the coronavirus pandemic TikTok is seeing people not only spending more time watching videos but also experimenting with the creation of different types of content, including in sports, gaming, cooking, fashion and beauty.

The company is also focusing more on live video, a feature that could make it feel like you're with people in real time even if you don't see them in person. TikTok users not only want something new and unique, they also want content that can bring them joy during quarantine, he said.

"It's not just music. It's, you know, all these different formats, from cooking to Q&A to...a little bit of a variety show," Thoensen said.

Tik Tok's plans for the future as it has to respond to competing against Instagram and facebook.

What made Tic Toc so popular? User-created video. So why would they get into the huge expense of creating their own content?

Facebook Live is still mainly built around user-created content. Do we really need another Netflix?

Tik Tok is in the middle of going after the Gen Z demo and they are marketing their platform to this audience though. Its kind of like how Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Myspace went after Gen Y and Millenials demo from the mid-2000's to present. Its about finding the growing median audience for Revenue and Returns to investors.

Tik Tok is in competition with Twitch (A Youtube Competitor) and with Snapchat.
