Timberlake Joins "SNL" 5-Timers Club

What was your take on Justin's fifth time around hosting Saturday Night Live? As expected, it was an awesome show! The cold open was a C-Span spoof, with Fred Armisen speaking fluent Spanish, paying tribute to the late Hugo Chavez of Venezuela. Cue Timberlake as Elton John, giving him a "tribute", ala "Candle In The Wind" with different lyrics. I'll let you guys fill in the rest, but not before I ask one question: Why in the hell were Jay Pharoah and Keenan Thompson only on in cameos? ???

I watched it to see Macklemore do "Thrift Shop." I haven't seen SNL in ages...are they recycling old bits? The 5 -timers club skit was almost a word for word remake of the 3-timers club skit from over 10 years ago!

Why not, they recycle stock characters all the time. That's something that Lorne Michaels, when he was creating the show said he didn't want to do. Then, he found out he could make money (i.e. movies, etc) on specific characters--which led to a parade of some truly awful movies, with a few decent ones (Wayne's World) thrown in.

KML, I'd say just about the entire cast played second fiddle to Justin. Justin isn't just a singer but also an actor so he was around a lot last night, probably slightly moreso than your average host.

Anytime a host hosts for the 5th time, they bring in the Five Timers Club and we always see a who's who of 5-time hosts. In this case, *****SPOILER ALERT****, singer Paul Simon (who looked about 125 years old), Chevy Chase (who looked only slightly younger), Steve Martin, Martin Short, Alec Baldwin, Tom Hanks, and Candice Bergen (the first woman admitted to the Club) all made appearances in the skit along with Dan Aykroyd (who has hosted just once) as the bartender. Pictures of John Goodman and Drew Barrymore were on the wall.

Martin and Aykroyd appeared in a dating skit as Two Wild and Crazy Guys. Former castmember Andy Samberg, making his second appearance this season since leaving the show, also appeared in the same skit with Justin as the D--k in a Box singers. Samberg had appeared a few weeks back when Adam Levine hosted.

My two fave sketches of the night were Vegan Ville and Bill Hader's Stefon character who was back on Update after a long absence. Update itself seemed to be unusually short this week.

Maine Justice was about the worst. This sketch was Jason Sudeikis's sketch of the night and it was pretty bad and it came pretty late in the show. I'd say Jason is on his way out.

Justin did a good job. The best episode of the season by far remains the Martin Short-hosted Christmas show. Most of the rest are middle of the pack with a few real bad ones (Adam Levine, Christoph Waltz). Justin was also his own musical guest. I'm not a fan of his new music but it was ok.

And, I'd have to say that was NOT Don Pardo announcing again. It just didn't sound like him.

The show is off for a month until April 6th when Melissa McCarthy hosts.

In my opinion, the dating skit should settle the age old question about "what happened to SNL? It used to be so good!"

Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg were more entertaining as their D*ck in a Box characters than Martin and Ackroyd were as the two wild and crazy guys. Martin and Ackroyd's lines fell flat and were rather unfunny. Apparently there was enough cocaine in the 70s and 80s to make everything seem funny.

What happened to SNL is that everyone has nostalgia for times past, even if they weren't that great. While I appreciated the nostalgia behind Martin and Ackroyd's appearances, I think it was a vivid illustration of how nostalgia trumps actual quality when it comes to comedy.

A couple testament's to the ravages of age: Ackroyd's jiggling midsection was clearly evident, while Martin white eyebrows made them look almost invisible.

This episode was much better than last week's with Kevin Hart; I like Hart and his stand-up shows (plus his reality parody show, Real Husbands of Hollywood on BET), but he seemed a bit out of place and the material just fell completely flat.

The "5-Timers" sketch was maybe the funniest sketch, in my opinion, next to the dating show parody. I'm not the biggest fan of Timberlake's music, although I did enjoy his music performance with Jay-Z; however, I think he's a pretty underrated actor (I thought his performances in Black Snake Moan, Alpha Dog, and In Time were really good).

The 5-Timers Club skit was just as great as when Tom Hanks became a member in 1990. However, it was curious of the 5-Timers who weren't there or mentioned. In particular Elliot Gould and Christopher Walken.

First time in 35 years Chevy Chase was funny in late night. (Looking at you, Fox.)

Exactly why was Chase there? If I recall, he only hosted once. Yes, I'm aware he (like Aykroyd) was an original cast member, but he bolted the show the first chance he got.

I watched a special on the 30th anniversary of SNL in '05, and Lorne Michaels told the story of Chase's departure. Essentially, Chase was asked to leave after one season in order to keep the concept of SNL going. Michaels was too worried SNL would become "The Chevy Chase Show" if he stayed on, and Chase had plenty of work offers on the table. Chase has come back to host SNL eight times since leaving in '76.

I know Belushi loathed him, yet the night J.B. died in March 1982, Nightline interviewed Chase about him.

Chevy has mellowed quite a bit over the years. Posts a LOT on Facebook. Very self-deprecating. He has said numerous times in recent years that he didn't really want to leave SNL and wouldn't if he could do it over again. Considers it a huge mistake.

Here's a picture that he posted that was taken backstage at SNL the other night....http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/c0.53.534.255.28113879004/p843x403/63949_619177224763140_1456933167_n.jpg

Apparently, he and Ackroyd are best friends these days. Dan performed the ceremony at Chevy's daughter's wedding last year.

Putting Chevy Chase's mistakes aside (like that hideous Fox talk show), and the fact that he may or may not be a nice person - I don't think you can say that leaving SNL was a "mistake" for him. He had a pretty successful career in the 80s and 90s acting in films, including the National Lampoon's Vacation franchise.

Justin Timberlake must've taken that photo!

I noticed that too. Would have been great if Buck Henry was in that skit as well.

I can believe that. He had a reputation for being abusive toward his fellow SNL cast members, and he hasn't hosted since the mid-90's, apparently because he was too abusive toward at least one member of the cast during his last time hosting. I don't believe, however, that last Saturday's episode was the first time he's appeared in a cameo since he last hosted. I had a friend who met him and found him to be extremely arrogant. I hope it's true that he's mellowed out in his old age. He's always had a lot of talent.
