Time For A Little Fun: Your Dream Radio Station in LA

KFI with much shorter commercial breaks. KNX with more than 3 news stories repeating and repeating for a whole day.

1.
stunt w/ "I love LA"/ "drinkin' in LA" / (etc)
from friday at 5...til monday at 6am

(im in buffalo, but *love* LA) and guesses 103.1 maybe the realistic
station I could acquire after winning the mega millions....

2.
monday at 6am, no non-sense..w/ the transition time..
every thing would be READY to go! *calling the station, *new*
for 90 days, then drop it !

also, *ALL* the production work would be ready *prior to the flip*
( personal note) it bugs me when stations flip, (they know its coming)
and take forever to "Start" the new station!! . . ie: jockless for months,
the "new" 103.1.....for, three years...etc.

3.
the [new] wik'd 103.1
format: chr, with a dance lean...
*BUT* not the usual, miscues that post-ers rant on this board.

MUSIC:
would be a cross between (bpm) and the 90s channel.(xm)
It would feature a lot of remixes, and up-beat music;
and not too heavy w/ the rap, and a touch of "gold"/backspins.

103:minute music mix, after the morning show...

I would have a deeper playlist...and have more mixshows...
during the dayparts, and take full advantage of being in
the best city in the world. I would play into being on hollywood blvd..
the tv tickets stuff, and being that close to vegas...(etc)

-a remote/studio on the santa monica pier...and,
be a big tie in w/ the LA Kings... seems like every one
else is all over the dodgers, basketball, and even the MLS
since you have the highest paid player....

-
Promotions:
would be unique as well.."radio's coolest contest" on fridays, the
listener would pick what they want to win ( ie: trip, money, tickets, etc)...
-
would have a 'mobile studio' at six flags...or universal studios.
not a van-remote, but an awesome studio, on site to be apart of some thing exciting.

DJs/Personalities:
- i would reeeeely try to have a reality show,
as in style of 'so you think you can be a morning show host'
-afternoon dj:
-evening dj:
(tba/since I'm not overly familiar) w/ the talents there...
also, would like to hire some one new/fresh up-coming, or
some one recently who left the market that should still be on...
(etc)
...
one *MAJOR* thing i would do, that would set my station apart:
i wouldnt have a 19th floor station, . . but, have the office on..
?/sunset(sigh...hmm : ) /sorry/ studio on sunset blvd. with a
"store front" studio, and encourage listeners to be welcome to
enter a 'listening area' and if the dj has a moment to say hello
(if time permits, and also keeping in mind, safety)
-
also: have a "booth" that listeners can sit and record
a :30 session, and that audio (may) be used on aire.
*BUT* the kicker...is actually USE Alot of audio people contribute...
-

Weekends:
would be pretty special, instead of just recycling a best of
the morning sickness, give about 5 hours on sat...(9-2) to
dj's that are the interns; university-college students, or
some one aspiring to be on the radio, for the right reasons...
one hour each, and a station approved playlist, they would
have their show...
-the sunday morning express would air an "energizer" show at 5am,
and have a non-stop mix, hot-100 (wik'd 100) countdown!!
non-stop, mixed together, commercial free, dubbed w/ voice overs,
simply to ID the song... no 'extra's as far as gossip, factoids...etc
100 song mix starting at 8am--ending ..?around 3pm,

this is an awesome post/thread, i hope it will get a lot of responses...
i have more input, but am excited to see the replies/feedback
(+/-) i will get soo far...

One more thing:
wik'd 103/home of the 5-day weekend....
live-to aire's from wednesday-sunday !!

wed:
live to aire, 10pm: best of today's music.

thurs: a top10@ten, countdown, of true CLUB hits...prior to
the live-2-aire, prepping the clubber for a night of true party music.

friday/not across America/7-10pm: a fun interactive show
10pm, live to aire w/ the morning show host (since they can sleep in sat)

sat 11pm - a throwback live to aire... favorites from the 90s, and early 2000s.

sunday 9pm:
(a 'trance_mission broadcast)
showcasing more of the anthems/non-vocal tracks that
are beat-focused that true dance fans will apperciate.

Hmm...I guess it would be KROQ with Howard Stern in the morning and Opie & Anthony in the afternoon. Commercial free. If possible.

Format- Dance and upbeat R & B (new & old school). From Jamiroquai to LMFAO to Inner City to Michael Jackson to Timbaland to Daft Punk to Shailmar to Miguel Migs to Depeche Mode to Prince to New Order ! Play the right mix so businesses can keep it on all day.

Frequency- 100.3.....Blow up The Sound and do a complete Media blitz. Hit the streets and give away inexpensive little FM/MP3 players set on 100.3

Name of Station- The New Dance 100.3 (KDNC)....L.A.'s Party Station!
Always fun, always alive and always upbeat! Have your Promotion Army out on the streets finding and rewarding the busninesses with Dance 100.3 on! Promote the heck out of that on the air!

5-10 with Fernando & Greg from the defunct Energy 92.7/SF for Mornings!
10-3 with Ron Parker (also from Energy)
3-7 with KIIS's Jo Jo On The Radio...or if you can't steal him away....Someone like him.
7-midnight.....A well known L.A. DJ/Mixmaster

Have an army out on the streets, promoting, giving away stuff, bumper stickers, concert tix...Total exposure all over L.A., The Valley, OC, Inland Empire!

Not enough on the street promotion anymore......I would bet my last dollar that with the full-signal coverage of the 100.3 stick.....You shoot right in to the Top 10 (in 4-5 books)

Would it work??

Blow up 100.3 and turn into an FM Talk station! Not to mention bring back the KLSX call letters.

Petros and Money...5-10am
Conway and Steckler...10-1pm
Danny Bonaduce...1-3pm
Tom Leykis...3-7pm
Adam Carolla and Teresa Strasser...7-10pm
Sam Phillips and Chris Leary...10-1 am

Weekends:
Tim Conway doing several informericals
Raiders/UCLA football
Speedfreaks

FM Talk is not dead, folks....

Something really really really gay, gayer than Seacrack if that's possible.

I'd launch a true alternative music station with Jonesy as midday host.

It will sound fresh!

A latin lean dance / latin rock/pop station. You'll hear Tiesto's, Armin van Buuren's, Kinky, Molotov, Belanova, Sussie 4, Nortec, Moenia, Deep Dish, Ferry Corsten, David Guetta, Black Eye Peas, etc.

My station will play latin remixes on regular rotation instead of only during the mixshows.

Every friday @ 5pm it will have a mixshow that features the world's best latin remixers/dj's such as Mijangos, Erax, etc. They will do a guest set, interview, and some of the artists they have worked with will call in/show up and join the conversation.

I'll try not to repeat the same songs all the time, and some will retire quickly. lol I can't stand it when I hear the same songs forever. lol

Starting Friday night and through he weekend it will feature mixshows by the world's biggest DJ's and some local ones.

My station will also do the first Latin Rave in SoCal! lol

I'm not sure if I want my personalities to be spanglish a la MTV Tr3s, or straight spanish. lol But I do want them to sound young, hip and cool. I don't want any personalities that have been previously in LA. lol It's time for change! lol

Imaging should be fast paced, similar to Telehit's or Exa's.

This is the LATIN Station LA is missing!!!

I'm still stunned that Radio_Bored_Op would choose to buy 103.1 with his lottery winnings:
must have been scratch-off card winnings.

Radio_bored-Op said:
i think:
103.1 is the most "available" in even a dream-scenario..
not like CC, will be ditching 102.7 or even 98.7
If I gave CC the m&m's in my pocket, they would probably give me 98.7...

If I had a dream station it would of course require me to have the money to keep a money losing proposition on the air. I would be perfectly happy with a nice 5kw am signal, maybe good old 1330 or 1300, and I would play...all Hawaiian, all the time. Its never going to happen but its kind of fun to dream about, like hitting the lottery.

Definitely KROQ from the 80's playing B sides and songs that won't hit the regular stations for at least a year.

I'm currently stuck back in Delaware taking care of my parents. In 2005 I was working at a job where I had access to Virgin Radio (UK) through the internet. They played the song "You're Beautiful" by James Blunt as a hot hit. The next year I had another job where they played "The River" a local DE FM on a boombox in the office. The song they played over and over was this new US hit by James Blunt called "You're Beautiful" which was the same song. :(

KROQ in it's day would have played YB at the same time as Virgin because they got the new songs when they were new. So I'd like a KROQ that has folks listening to the latest alternative and new music and put it on without waiting for the rest of the country to catch up. ;)

Oh, and less hard rock. That always ticked me off.

P.S.: Thanks for the emoticons back! :D ;D :-* ;)

I would go with 94.7 for my frequency and Hot AC for my format, "K-Hits 94-7," or something like that. It would lean very current, almost an adult CHR but no rap nor hard rock. I would mix in adult-friendly hip-hop and modern rock, even toss in some AAA hits to give it some flavor. The gold library would be mostly from this decade and some from the 90's. Specialty shows, however, could feature old "ROQ of the 80's" hits.

Assuming Ryan Seacrest and Ellen K were not available, or just too expensive for my budget, I would look outside the market for a similar morning show with a proven ability to attract 25-49 year old females. Perhaps someone from San Diego or SF that knows the LA lifestyle. The rest of the day would be more music intensive.

I never answered the question to my own post!
I would take over the 93.9 frequency and start an Alternative station branded as either "[ALT 93.9]", "Live/93.9" or "Rocket 93.9"
The station's playlist would sound like a cross between KROQ and Indie 103.1 focusing our playlist on artists like Phoenix, Fall Out Boy, Muse, Rise Against, Silversun Pickups, Incubus, Kings of Leon, Death Cab for Cutie, etc. and new and upcoming artists like All Time Low, We The Kings, etc. and have CHR style energy and imaging. Similar to AMP, the station would launch with "93.9 MINUTES NONSTOP MUSIC" for around 2 months and target a younger audience than KROQ and KYSR. The station could even pose a threat to KIIS.
While the station would be music intensive, the station would have personalities with Stryker (from AMP, ex-KROQ) in the morning drive, Madison (from Sirius XM Alt Nation) on middays, Kallao on the afternoon drive (ex-91X) and TK (ex-Indie 103.1) on nights.
The station target would try to attract the same target audience as a Top 40 (18-34) with a focus on females. (The station would not play a big majority of hard rock like KROQ does at times.)
Maybe I should propose my idea to GRC? HAHAH Yeah right ;D

Thousands of classic hits / oldies would be featured in my rotation (50's thru mid 80's) with incredible weekend specials and listener interaction (giveaways, contests, requests). In other words, the way radio used to be...so long ago!! We'll even throw in a few classic jingles and evening countdowns to spruce things up, for L.A. that is.
