Time For Something Creative

Why is it that all pre game and post game shows are a carbon copy of each other? 5 guys sitting at a long desk. Anchor guy on one side and some former players round out the panel. You can be assured of the guys getting on one another, some laughter, and then one panelist will get real serious and say something that we all knew anyway. Time for some innovation! And, good grief, why do those post game on field interviews? You see one, you've seen them all. "Well we knew our backs were against the wall and we had to come out and play hard for 60 minutes"

How about having a segment called "Make Dan Marino Smile"?

Seriously, whenever they have tried to do something different, whether it was Rush Limbaugh, Frank Caliendo, or Wanda Sykes on "Inside The NFL", it's pretty much blown up in their faces.

I miss James Brown teamed up with Howie, Terry, and Jimmy. JB's replacement just doesn't cut it for me.

Thank God FOX did get smart a few years ago and dumped that "weather girl" and Jimmy Kimmel. They added nothing to the show.

One of the best shows on TV (for Football) is on ESPN with Chris Berman.

And when faced with a big ol story like an NFL player shooting himself in the leg, illegally posessing a gun no less, the NBC crew sprinted away from the controversy when Bob Costas and Tiki Barber dropped the issue of "gang protection" of some NFL players.

Really? Is organized crime from the hood a problem in our NFL? Am I in danger of a drive by if I go to an autograph session?

Jimmy Kimmel on Fox couldn't have been any worse than Dennis Miller
on ABC. Look how long that lasted.

Frankly, I prefer college telecasts--more straightforward, less
show biz--at least on CBS; ESPN's are as bad as the NFL's,
especially their pregame shows.

In Atlanta, it was all Michael Vick all the time last year when he was arrested for dogfighting. The incident was all over local Atlanta media (and I suspect the Richmond press too - as the incident occured in Virginia), as well as the national news and sports media. The incident was immortalized in VH1's "I Love The New Millenium", and spawned an entire season of "DogTown" on the National Geographic Channel. Not to mention countless other specials, and an ESPN live town hall meeting that aired in the wake of the scandal.

It is like rappers and other celebrities...some of these players get money, and go hang out with the wrong crowds. It is a small minority of these players.

As for the NFL broadcasts...they will do whatever it takes to get back the exorbanate sums of money they pay the NFL for the rights. One way...cut the costs. The other...keep the audience tuned in.

BTW...our local CBS station, WGCL-TV (yeah...those guys) preempted the halftime of the UGA-GA Tech game for an election special (mainly to get the $$$$$ that is flowing to local broadcasters here as a result of the US Senate runoff...which may give the Democrats their 60th Senate seat). As creative as that is...the politicos are big football fans...and they probably PO'ed them.

Be creative...but within limits.

Dunno about Richmond, but he came from Virginia Tech which is in the Roanoke DMA, where I live. It was quite a big deal...

The weather girl is still there. And Kimmel was merely replaced by the Frank guy.
