Time Magazine article inspiring

The October 9th issue of Time Magazine has a wonderful article entitled "Still Tuned In" on page A13.

Some straight and sobering talk about radio in general as well as the inspirig stories of KTAO in Taos, NM and WMVY on Martha's Vineyard.

Some quotes from Bob Diddlebock's article:

"Today, the top 20 radio groups own at least 3000 stations out of 11,000 outlets"

"Along the way, Big Radio lost a good chunk of bored 18-24-year-olds, many of whom have defected to their iPods or other indies."

"The time consumers have spent listening to mainstream radio has declined 14% over the last decade"

It was one of those moments where I didn't feel like I was alone in what I try to convey to people here and elsewhere about where radio is going.
This article seems to suggest that there are still folks who want to bring radio back to a community-based standard. Something sorely lacking in day-to-day listening.
Very cool and inspiring.

Lafayette,
WMVY is voice tracked most of the time and really sucks. Listen to them online and decide for yourself.

Whenever I need a little motivation, I have an old 'best of' video from Art Vuolo that I pop in the ole VCR.

That seems to do the trick.

Based on the article, they are probably doing it out of necessity and not by choice.

Most of BIG RADIO has the money to have live on-air staff. These guys are probably struggling each month to keep the lights on, but still manage to make it all community-driven and community-based. Sorely lacking in the land of local voice-track. Another branch of the same tree as to what is making radio suck so bad.

I'm also aware that it's a much more "quaint" set-up out there on the island of Martha's Vineyard and not a death match fight for a tenth of a rating share like in the Top 10 markets.

Still, the spirit of the article is intact. I was surprised that a magazine like Time would even bother with a borderline "feel good" piece. :)

How can you tell she's voicetracking? Because it's so bad?
I think the female jock (Laurel?) I was listening to would be pretty bland live OR voicetracked! Some things (like lack of genuine talent) can't be fixed either way!

Otherwise, I'm listening to WMVY instead of any of my local stations. Great tunes.
Good thing or bad thing?

From Midday host Laurel on WMVY:

"... and I'd be fibbing if I said that we don't take advantage of modern
technological advances at times, but we prefer sharing the music
together
in the moment... we take pride in the fact that our approach to radio
is
inclusive, proactive and responsive. We don't sit back and let the
computers run the show... we are active participants shaping the sounds
and loving the notes as they play right alongside you...

I hope this answers your question..."

They either DON'T voice track "all the time" or she's a lying dirty whore.

FYI

Come on guys! Quit picking on WMVY. They are just a little station.
Sounds like Martha's Vinyard, MA has a real Oasis in it to me.

As I said, I ended up listening to WMVY online after reading that article and loving it, voice-tracked or not.

Oasis or not, you'd have to clear at LEAST $50K-$75K to pay your bills out there (pronounced "out THEY-yah").

;D
