Time on the Beach

I can't top -9-'s story but I do have a story about a guy who was fired twice by the same PD. Actially he might have quit the first time but here goes anyway.

Charlie Warren was our afternoon drive guy at WFTL in Fort Lauderdale. He did skits and other personality bits that were just right for the typical MOR-A/C station in the '70's. Mike Harvey came in as PD of WFTL and before I know it Charlie is going to WBEN. J. Robert Wood is bragging on how he hired a guy from the land of sunshine to come work in blizzard city. Not too long after that Mike Harvey also leaves for the the PD spot at WHAM. Charlie by this time has moved on to WWSW in Pittsburgh where he is doing mornings. Then Mike Harvey gets a job at WWSW as PD (I guess he made GM later) and in a short time Charlie is history.

I don't know any details but what are the odds of these two guys winding up in the same place? It's a small radio world so be nice to everyone you meet!

Long dormant but back on the board, the Midnight Skulker lives! Welcome back.

Some of these stories ought to be in a book. This one isn't momentous, but it's the one that stands out in my uneventful career. I worked for a decent station where life was good until the newly-hired GM, for whatever reason, walked into the studio and told me, in a stern and foreboding voice, "I'll fire you on Christmas Eve if I have to, so you'd better start looking." It was unprovoked and came out of nowhere. I'd never received a warning, there were no prior issues.

This GM was an ex-TV manager, a boozer (and by extension, a loozer) and a power jerk; all hat and no cattle. His MO was to arrive late, go out for three hour martini lunches and come back to work with so much alcohol in him you didn't dare smoke near him for fear of setting him on fire. He'd terrorize the sales staff and wander around the building re-arranging his junk, playing pocket-pool in full view of the secretary-traffic person, visitors and clients, other jocks, the engineer and anybody else who didn't shield their eyes. Brilliant man he was. A born leader.

After he advised me as to my future at "his" station, I went to the local Loblaws (I preferred Bells, but Loblaws was closer) after I got off the air, picked up some boxes, went back to the station and packed my headphones, carts, cassettes (airchecks) and reels, a few awards and pictures from my shared DJ lounge desk and my treasured Third Class Radiotelephone Operator Permit with Broadcast Endorsement from the control room studio.

The GM comes by and says, "what are you up to?" What a maroon. I told him I had plans for Christmas and they didn't include being out of a job. Handed him my station key and told him to put my check in the mail within 30 days. Buh-bye.

The twit had the nerve to tell me I was being "very unprofessional." I laughed and said "you were the guy who told me to find a new job because you'd fire me on Christmas Eve... real professional that was." As far as I was concerned, I had been fired in advance. He then says, "you won't be getting a letter of recommendation from us." Right. As if he was going to give me one "on Christmas Eve." Nice present that would have been.

Fortunately, the family business held me over for a few months before I got another job back in "da biz" at another flame-throwin', hot-rockin', ten-in-a-row game show.

Tom Puckett?

Really?

He was one of the casualties of the WGR-WBEN newsroom merger (along with Ray Marks, Emilie Story, and others I've unfortunately forgotten - sorry about that). Of course, he's back on WBEN now, which is good, 'cause I've always thought he was a nice guy.

Ah, but how many have been fired by the same guy twice?

You mean besides Billy Martin? :D

Actually, there's one radio alum I can think of who DID get fired by the same guy (Greg Reid) within a year, a guy I also used to work with but has now fallen into the "where are they now" file...
Michael Mroziak had been let go by WBEN during the WGR-WBEN merger, only to be "rehired" the following week in their copywriting department. Later that year "Mroz" was let go again (this time for good) when Entercom was cutting budget and jobs left and right. After that he was in public radio, then he decided to give PR a try. He pretty much disappeared after that.

Guys, you gotta get your facts right when on this board. Buddy Shula has rarely worked at "low rent" radio stations. If you call WPHD "low rent" when he was just 16 years old. IF you call WYRK "low rent" than your right. Buddy spent 10 years on air there, and was NOT fired, ever. Not evn for throwing the f bomb. He got a job offer at WVOR Rochester, another "low rent" radio station, spent a few years at 107.7 making a fortune, and you know the rest. Still at the best broadcast company, in the best industry! You have to get your facts correct. It is always ok to give your opinion, but when you use "facts" make sure they are correct.

Facts?

Let's not stretch the truth too much...

A year on weekends at WPhD in the middle '80s.
A year on overnights at WZIR - low rent territory for sure.
Three months on overnights at WRXT - more low rent.

Then there's a two month gap until:

Overnights on WYRK. For nine years. NINE YEARS on OVERNIGHTS?
A cup of coffee (4 months) doing evenings at WVOR in late '95.
3 1/2 years at WNUC doing combo on-air & sales. You don't consider that a low-rent station?
Let's not forget weekends at the mighty WBTF in Batavia.

Buddy is a major sales person at Star. He makes a lot of money. As an air talent, he's a great sales guy.

BTW - I still don't believe that the poster is really Buddy. But, hey, it's fun to pick on ANYBODY who names himself SHULA.

Sir, Having knowledge of the man's work history to the extent you do, you are either the man's father, his agent, employer or you work for Hyperion or Transunion.

Again folls, on air since 1983, on eof the top Enterom sales persons in the COUNTRY, never ever any job but radio, and still leads the charge for the industry. It is pretty impressive to do that in Buffalo. When he buys a local station, you'll see what i mean.

Eureka!

At last we have the answer. Buddy will buy WWKB from Entercom, and turn it into a gold mine!

Yes, and didn't Forbes magazine recently list Buddy Shula as one of the Top 100 richest people in the world? If memory serves, the Christian Broadcasting Network just produced a new holiday special entitled: "Buddy Shula, God's Forgotten 2nd Son: 'Obey him, as you would obey me.' "

Buddy1025 - when I was a kid(as you are now), we hero worshipped The Beatles, The Stones and Joe Namath....not radio salesmen in Buffalo. Who do you have sex fantasies about - Ugly Betty?
