Time to End Award Shows on TV

The Academy Awards, Emmys, Tony Awards, SAG, AFI; all these shows, in my opinion, are boring.

With the exception of a few people, most of the hosts of these shows remind me of a stale vaudeville act. Those presenting the awards have an expression on their faces that they rather be somewhere else. The winners, many who give long-winded speeches, almost always thank everyone from Aunt Betty to their last physical conquest. A few winners often use this event to offer their political views; like anyone really cares.

I have no idea what the audience ratings are for these award shows, but I can't believe they generate that many viewers.

Since its highly unlikely that award shows will end because I want them, then at least televise these shows on some cable network that nobody watches anyways. Why waste time on over-the-air networks?

You neglected to single out the Grammys... so I reckon that show's still interesting? ::)

I agree. A lot of people just tune in to see the stars. The ballots may be somewhat fair, but
if voters are to pick from a song 9 months old or the one that was #1 last week and which
they are hearing 5 times a day................which do you think will win 90% of the time?

There are too many of them also. Why do we need a music awards show every two weeks?

I agree with all of you. I don't watch. I would rather see the "Cliff's Notes" version (if anything at all) later. Rest assured, if anything major happens, you will see it repeated on all the other shows ad nauseum. And while we're at it, get rid of all the shows that focus on the red carpet, and who was wearing what designer and whatever. Those are boring, too.

The ratings are generally good, and that's the bottom line. That's why the networks "waste time" putting them on the air. People have been complaining about how boring awards shows are since they were first broadcast 60+ years ago.

Since you find them boring, and a waste of your time, why don't you watch one of your 200 other channels?

I find reality shows boring, and wish they would disappear. But gosh darn it, not everybody is like me, and millions of them like reality shows. Those other people suck! ;D

The awards shows for movies and TV are incredibly boring. I don't need to hear "thank you, thank you, thank you" all night. I never watch those. I occasionally watch the music-related awards shows - at least then you're basically getting a free concert on TV. I like the CMA's best (seeing that I'm a big country music fan).

I watched the Grammy Awards exactly once in the last 20 years, and I remembered quickly why I stopped watching it in the first place. Anyone who performed immediately won the next award. A musician with six albums in the prior ten years won the best new artist award.

The Grammy's lost all credibility with me when Milli Vanilli won "Best New Artist" and Jethro Tull won "Best Heavy Metal Artist".

And don't get me started on the 'rap'! :D

I think they should change the name to the garbage music awards. The Grammy are strange in the way how these artists that they nominate that nobody knows.I remember when Nora Jones won.I said who in the hill is that. The CMA's are great as mentioned earlier but they should change the name to CRMA "Country Rock Music Awards"The Oscars drag when especially when a comic hosts the show. The recent FOX country awards show's format stinks.I think it will get canceled next year. The Americam Music Award are still great. the show keep moving on..

Looks like it's computer use day at Shady Oaks Retirement Castle. ;)

The award shows for music and movies are probably losing more real credibility because of the dramatic changes in each realm's distribution. Technology has knocked down some of the 'filters' of needing to be blessed by major studios or record labels. The independent scenes in each realm have found new ways to benefit. The only thing keeping these awards viable for TV relevancy are the 'stars' getting the big pushes on radio, TV, and in theaters.

Think about it...out of the myriad of movies produced, can they really crown one definitive 'best picture'? Can their really be one universally agreed upon 'new artist of the year'? You could ask these questions years before, but you didn't have the true alternatives for first-run entertainment that you have today.

I'm on the same page as those who believe a two to three hour show of people repeatedly saying "thank you" is so boring. That's the reason I haven't watched a single awards show in over two decades.

Besides if I was interested in finding out who won what, all I need to do is go on-line the next morning after the show aired.

I will say that I DON'T understand why people have *that* many problems with the Grammys, the AMA's, all of the MTV/BET and country music award shows, etc. The live music performances are the real draw, especially when they go out of the way to create those collaborative performances that few have seen or would imagine before. The Eminem-Elton John Grammy awards pairing comes to mind, I still remember that years later. Now with YouTube and viral videos, you're going to have people come back to those.

I'll also say something towards the idea of having a somewhat polarizing host. People are still talking about Ricky Gervais' hosting of the Golden Globes, and I can't be the only one who looked out for clips online without caring about the awards at all.

Russell Brand at the 2008 MTV VMAs was an another example of a polarizing host mostly due to his comments back then on the '08 election.

I generally find the Oscars/Golden Globe boring, but I'd hope others would still watch it, so that they still exist. Sometimes it's nice seeing the stars dressed up too.

For my purpose, I am interested to know which movies or actors gets nominated and wins - though I read about it, rather than find out about it on the program. It gives me an idea of what movies to ultimately watch.

I think they could do away with hosts, and get to just having something simple and then last year winners and others getting to presenting the awards.

I also find these shows to be really boring, so I simply don't watch. Many of these shows still earn very good ratings -- ratings which would probably drop substantially if they were shifted to a cable network. All things considered, it seems to make sense for the majority of these awards shows to remain on broadcast networks...and I'll just continue to watching something else on those nights.

Maybe you might want to consider doing the same...

I still like awards shows. I wish the Grammys would show more awards being given. I do like some of the performances because at least, unlike the American Music Awards, the Grammys are about quality.

For the TV and Movie awards, I'd like to see more clips of the nominees. And at the Oscars I'd really like toi see clips because chances are I won't see the movie for several years.
