Time To Reminisce

OK, I recently asked about you radio-insiders' appointment radio picks. Now I am interested in hearing what you all MISS in Seattle radio. Specific shows, personalities or (even better) specific features. Here are some of mine:

1. Robin & Maynard. I especially miss their old feature from "KXRX" days: "Who DARES scale the Robin & Maynard WALL OF IGNORANCE?!" And Roy Otis.
2. I used to love Charlie & Ty's Pirate thing that they did every year at Seafair time. ("Ahoy, matey!")
3. I miss Dr. Laura. (I know, I know... but it makes good radio!)
4. I used to love the Friday Morning Competition on KMPS back in the far-back days of Phil Harper, Don Riggs & Patty Par. Now that was fresh, fun radio.
5. Mark Allen was fun in the afternoon drive at KPLZ back in the late 80's. I miss "Stereo Wars."
6. I did like Pat Cashman's show when he was on The Buzz. Even Lisa Foster. And the tired "bit" where she tap-danced herself into a fit & then crashed & burned. Silly & juvenile but, well, so am I.
7. KXRX overall. My all-time favorite station. The Crow-West Morning Roadshow (or whatever they called it) was even good. Neither of those guys has been half as good since they split.

Anybody else? (I'm expecting Seattlex19 to pipe in about the Tom Martino show!)

I also wish I had been around for the days of The Emperor and Pat O'Day on KJR. Too young.

Thanks for your thoughts!

As a huge R&M fan, I too miss the old KXRX days, don't forget "Dead or Alive"! How may people lost their entire wad on Abe Vigoda???? I agree KXRX was the BEST station Seattle ever had. I beleive they will return to Seattle radio in all their glory real soon!

Crow and West were brilliant together! Some of the other people I had forgotten about, thanks for sharing.

I always thought the story of KHIT (1984-87) would make a blockbuster comedy movie - even more hilarious because it was all true. From the million dollar prize debacle to their weird signal. From the starry eyed programmers to the mix of air talent (legendary names in 1984 and odd tenderfoots straight out of broadcasting school by '87.) There was always snafus everywhere on KHIT that would drive a radio person bonkers, but an average movie watcher would be rolling off the couch in hysterical laughter.

Thanks for bringing up that sore topic!! :p

J Michael Kenyon on KVI in the early 80's and, later in the decade, KING-AM. His "Seven-Eleven Sports" evenings on KVI was the best radio show in Seattle, even if you didn't care about sports. He also had for one season (One? Maybe two.) a Saturday afternoon show called "College Football Scoreboard," with his cohost Grayle Howlett, which was four hours of college football scores and telephone reports from stringers, and it was GRIPPING, even when you already knew all the scores.

He was less successful in afternoon drivetime on KING. He was in a format and a time slot which was not suited to his manner of discourse.

J Michael Kenyon reading the Everett telephone book for four hours would be more interesting, entertaining, and informative than Dave Ross interviewing Jesus Christ on the occasion of the Second Coming.

I MISS HAVING A DEDICATED FM TALK STATION IN SEATTLE!!

ENTERCOM YOU SUCK SUCK SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK

Well I miss hearing Hornby singing the Canadian National Anthem. You could tell by the way sung it - he had a true passion for his homeland.

Funny, I was gonna mention Bob Blackburn - and there is a post about him above - he was one of the Best "sports" announcers, very fair to BOTH teams, not the one sided stuff we get here locally now - the announcers locally of "all" pro sports are so one sided I don't listen to them.

Bill Carter, on KVI late night with a Talk Program (I remember the Far West spots as well as the "tire truing" ads).

Bob Hardwick, sure would be great to have a "personality" like this on the air again.

Also while not "local" but you could still listen to him late at night and on a weak signal, was there ever anyone better than Ira Blue from KGO in SF?

Well, it WAS mornings & then they kept switching R&M and C&W time slots. Which brings up another thing that I really REALLY miss: decent shows in afternoon drive time.

Have to agree with Tee Taw regarding R&M and KXRX; although, I wish he/she would spend more time ensuring my Tater Tots are cooked just so.

Also loved:

Lan Roberts (the Mr. Science and Jimmy bit resulted in my high school physics teacher being renamed Mr. Physics)
Langan & West
Crow & West
Posey & Minor

At one time it was nice when R&M were playing music you could flip over to Crow & West and if they were playing music you could flip over to Posey & Minor and if they were playing music you could flip over to R&M and if they were playing music.........

Given the rich history of morning personalities in Seattle, it makes me wonder how we ended up where we are now.

In my opinion the beginning of the end began in the late 80's, when the FCC allowed these tie geeks to own as many stations as possible. I am pretty sure most people don't even know that 4 of the stations they may listen to are all owned by the same company.

Great radio stations were the ones that were owned by people who loved radio, who loved music and who loved great on air personailties. Yes, they were in it to make money but they made you feel good about supporting their station. You wanted to go to a listener party, you wanted to support a charity fund raiser.

Hate to sound like an old timer, but I am. Too many politics and too much money ruin everything.

I'll run into Howard Hoffman down in LA now and then. Asked him about the KHIT days once and I got a big-time eye roll and he kinda muttered "Gawd I wish NO ONE had heard that.....". I actually LIKED his show -- pretty good for days when one person still expected to "carry" the entire morning show without a cast of 20.

ANNNNNNSSWWEEERRRRRRRRR MEEEEEEEEE!!!!
(remember "Mr. Stress....???")

And, of course, there was my buddy ... the lithium-filled (but always entertaining) Anddddyyyyyyy-Barber. Some VERY interesting off-air stories to tell on THAT front....!!!!

I loved Howard Hoffman and Carolyn Tappan. What is she doing these days anyway?

"Wake me up/With Andy Barber/I can't turn my dial any farther (changed to "I won't turn my dial any farther" when KMGI went on the air.)

I really think surviving former KHIT staff should get together and write the whole KHIT story. Then sell it to Hollywood or even an indie film company....

A quick Andy story.
There were days that I would look out the 2nd story window from the Watermark Tower and watch Andy stroll down 1st and walk into a porn shop...wearing his KHIT jacket! Maybe he got us some new listeners there.

Last I heard, Andy was in Tulsa.

Ahhh...1st Ave back in the day. Where gentrification and smut lived side by side...

Remember one of the CHEESIEST KHIT TV ads? When it showed this hot babe with big hair kissing this guy for 20 seconds as a Wham! song played. She then looked into the camera and says "All the guys I know listen to KHIT 107..."

Ooooooh....yeeeeaaaahhhhh baby.... Make me room temprature!

But when your station is surrounded by porn theatres, escort services, topless dancers and XXX magazine shops, I'm sure in some subversive way, that influence is going to show up somewhere....
