Time to turn out the "Lite"

Mike Sheridan said:
So you've got to ask what the heck happened? For years Lite was on top of K-104.7. There were occasional flips when K bested Lite. Now I'm just talking about the overall 12+ or now 6+ numbers. There was talk here all the time that K should give up and do something else. They stayed the course and just worked on it.

To me it seems like Lite went down just like Magic 96. They let it go down without doing much, like someone inside was trying to sink it. I just don't understand why.

Several years removed from the Morehead days, Mike, I think I can comment on your thought.

Yes, they did let it go down without doing much, mainly because the sales staff Magic did not know the format, couldn't be bothered to learn the format, and as a result, never sold anything on the format. It was revenue, not ratings, that killed Magic.

Oldies listeners had (at that time, I can't speak for nowadays) the highest level of disposable income of anybody. Magic had around 12 years of brand loyalty. The morning show at Magic made it abundantly clear to management that we would go out at any time with any rep to any client and help to sell spots and/or live sponsorships. We did live spots for a pest control business that had to hire extra help to keep up with demand; we knew how to sell ice to Eskimos.

Would you care to bet on how many of the sales reps actually took us up on our offer? Less than a half dozen.

In the days when it was us and the End in the building, we watched over and over as the End got the station vehicles, promotional items, jackets, shirts, etc. It seemed like they printed new shirts for every single event. We had paper clip holders with the name of the show on them. In all honesty, I do not recall how our numbers stacked up against the End's, and I'm smart enough to know that ratings success doesn't hinge on a shirt, but station promotion is station promotion.

In the early days of the show we would take cartons of Krispy Kremes and walk office buildings, handing them out and introducing ourselves as the new morning show on Magic. You suggest such a tactic now to most morning shows and they'd laugh in your face.

So yes, they did just let it go down the drain and watch as it did so. August of 2004 began the worst year of my life, and in a lot of ways my family and I are still trying to recover from having the rug pulled out from under us.

It was revenue, not ratings. And I'd be willing to bet the same apathy ran rampant in the halls at Lite.

Easy to believe Egg. While I was at 104.7 it was the same as you described. Everything was staffed and geared toward Kiss-95.1 while K-104.7 got crumbs. Strange way to treat a 100KW station.

102.9 in the days when it was EZ-102.9 did a take it EZ at work promotion. We gave away cash to people who listened to the station in the workplace. The jocks went out with a check and tape recorder to record the winners. Needless to say we made friends fast! It was a great way to introduce the station!

Typical, Egg and Mike. Reminds me of the old days before consolidation, back when there were such things as AM/FM combos, the sales staffs always seemed to focus on the station that was the easier sell. The one that provided the path of least resistance. Usually, it was the FM station that made money while the AM sister followed far behind. Smart operators had separate sales staffs for each.

I think you're going to see lots of listeners going to the two country stations.

Oh, yeah, that's the noise I hear from 96.9 or 103.7 - God rest Bill Dollar and the good days of REAL country music!! Today's country (from the past 10 years) has actually converted this old fart (me) to listening to 95.1 or 96.1 - I can tell little difference in it versus today's "country".

Eric

I don't understand the point of this "New 103.7." WSOC-FM 103 was the brand identity that station has been known for, as a nationally recognized country contender. Not sure what they're trying to do with the format now. I'm guessing they're trying to disassociate from WSOC-TV Channel 9. But WESC 92.5 plays more classic country, and other choices are 99.9 Kiss Country, and WSSL-100.

Are you within range of 1410 AM or 550 AM, at least during the day? Good stuff!

It's truly amazing - to me - that both WESC and WSSL have pulled good numbers for the past, well as long as I can remember. And both are owned by Clear Channel. My personal request would be for WESC to go strictly classic country, but then that would probably mess up a great formula - because it's been and continues to work for CC.

Judging from the most recent ratings posted on radio-info.com, the folks in charge at "the New 103.7" might want to reconsider the dropping of those legendary WSOC call letters.  Yeah, I know it's the PPM era, but the "country" horserace is not as quite as tight as it has been traditionally.

Since I'm only an occasional listener, I'm not sure what other changes they've made, but all need to be re-examined at this point.

WSOC is trending downward in cume and share while Kat Country is trending upward.
The margin between the two is growing wider.

All and all - not a good sign!

The New 103-7

I don't understand The New 103-7 either. There's nothing really new about it. They should have kept it WSOC. There are other CBS Radio country stations that use their calls: WYCD, KILT, KNCI, KMPS, and WQYK. But, what do I know? I'm just a listener. I don't get paid big bucks to screw up a legendary station.

CBS isn't doing great with CHR/Kiss 95.1, either. They sound tired, IMO, compared to Channel - and that helium sound thanks to the music pitching doesn't help, either. Listening to Channel vs. Kiss, it's no wonder Kiss is falling behind.

Check out the Boston boards. A legendary, homegrown alternative rock station just got bought by CC. They blew it up today and made it "101.7 The Harbor" Same crap as 102.9 The Lake. Same playlist, same voice over folks. People in Boston are not happy!

I read some people in Boston commenting on The Lake/Charlotte after checking it out to see what to expect from 101.7/Harbor. They all agreed that The Lake looked/sounded horrible compared to the previous variety hits station, 93.7 Mike FM, in that market. That was an Entercom station, and I guess it sounded a lot like 98.7 Simon.

The Lake is just awful - imaging and music. There are some exceptions, but Clear Channel just can't pull this format off very well at all. There's no room in the market for The Lake...bad choice.
