Time Warner may have to pull some channels soon???

Saw this ad on page 4a of this morning's D&C.

"Attention Time Warner Cable Customers:

Our agreements with programmers to carry their services routinely expire from time to time. We are usually able to obtain renewals or extensions of such agreements and carriage of programming services is discontinued only in rare circumstances. Our agreement with the networks listed below will expire soon, and Time Warner Cable may be required to cease carriage of this station in the near future:

Spike TV
HGTV
Encore
Encore Action
Encore Love
Encore MoviePlex
Encore Mysteries
Encore True
Encore WAM
Encore Westerns
Flix
Showtime
The Movie Channel "
Our negotations continue. Please check our website for updates-

Im sure this is more of a national thing with these channels instead of a local/regional thing (like MSG/Fox Sports Net in 2004)

I can honestly say I approve if Time Warner drops every one of these. Let the contract expire, the hell with all of those channels. The ONLY one I watch is Spike, and that's pretty rare. Usually it's only if I'm flipping through and Spike happens to be running an episode of MXC and there's nothing else on. Spike gets an extra ½ point for running Bond movies, but I have most of 'em on DVD... I can watch those on my own schedule without commercials.

I couldn't care less about HGTV... and the rest of these are all pay channels, which I don't subscribe to. So long, and thanks for playing! TimeWarner can either pass the savings along to customers, or use the money to get some other, better channels. Seriously, I think catering to the many requests for the NFL Network would be better than maintaining 7 different versions of Encore.

They never tell you the whole story. As I wrote in another thread, it's a negotiating ploy, particularly with the movie channels, which are not difficult to get a contract renewal for because, unlike local stations, they don't have as many conditions. Here is what else is happening here:

Spike, Showtime, Flix and TMC are all Viacom products. Viacom wants bundled carriage contracts which lock cable systems into a large number of their owned channels, including several less important diginets, for at least five if not ten years. They also want TW to spend more advertising money on promoting their pay tier (TW systems traditionally promote HBO/Cinemax more).

HGTV - There is no excuse for this one at all. This, along with DiY, Food, and Fine Living are all Scripps-Howard owned networks that are available for dirt cheap and the vast majority of cable systems contract for the whole bundle. Why HGTV is being negotiated individually is quite a mystery, unless Scripps is asking for ancillary things like more on demand storage.

The Encore multiplex is owned by Starz! which has always been basically ignored by TW systems, who grudgingly carry this premium movie channel launched by the old TCI cable empire (later AT&T bought it). Starz! wants on demand for their premium channels which TW still doesn't carry. Encore's bouquet is classified as a minipay because it's about half the price of traditional premiums, and actually does a good job of securing quality movies (far better than Flix, Showtime's designated minipay which shows mostly dregs).

None of these channels have a prayer of going off TW's lineup. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if it is part of the usual excuse they will give when they send out the January "newsletter" which is really just this year's rate increase announcement with excuses about increased programming costs.

Contracts have been signed for all TWC areas in the Rochester division except for one small area - Penn Yan. Expect this to be resolved in the next week or so. No channel drops will occur.

However, the introduction of Rochester Sports TV on channel 26 displaces TLC to Channel 52, which in turn displaces Hallmark to Channel 76 (channel Siberia) this weekend. Some rural systems outside of Monroe & Ontario counties part of TW will displace other channels. More info here: http://www.timewarnercable.com/rochester/programming/channelchanges.html

thanks for the update Phil, quick question what is the link to the Roadrunner feedback newsgroup again where we talked about TW channels and RR service. I screwed up my outlook express and I now dont have it listed anymore.

It isn't just you - the whole thing is gone. I have heard RR was planning on outsourcing newsgroup service, which would likely spell the end of the whole local internal newsgroups.

I intend on launching a new site for the discussion of local broadband issues and have a reader-friendly resource that doesn't overwhelm people with technical jargon up and running by the new year, so I'll post a link. It will have forums for interactive discussions as well. It seems that the time is right for something like this, especially as new players work to enter the market.

The aforementioned new site is now live running a forum devoted to discussion of local western New York broadband issues, as well as a forum dedicated to news about new channel offerings and other services available from local multichannel video providers. It launched less than 24 hours ago, so expect further site development as we get things up and running:
