TIME WARNER TO LAUNCH REGIONAL SPORTS NETWORK, HEADLINED BY LAKERS BASKETBALL

http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/editorials/la-ed-lakers-20110220,0,479495.story

It looks like Time Warner raking in Los Angeles Lakers basketball to headline their upcoming regional sports network.
This was an offer the Lakers could not refuse, $3 Billion for 20 years is a crazy deal compared to their $35 Million deal with FSN. This will for sure play a big role in the upcoming debate about carriage rights and a-la-carte programming as well.
I am 99.8% sure that TWC isn't going to give AT&T, Dish or DirecTV a good price on their network at those prices and there's a good chance that the percentage of people on these carriers will not be able to watch Lakers basketball for 20 years.

... and higher upon high TWC cable bills, hooray! :p

As far as I know, most of Los Angeles picked up TWC when Comcast and TWC bought out Adelphia Cable. They have great coverage in the metro area while the Orange County suburbs are split between TWC and Cox. Cox the mostly contols the San Diego area, while there are some spots of TWC down there as well.

Wow, the way I figure the math on this, that contract is valued at $13 per person in LA, per year. That's not per fan, thats not per TWC subscriber, thats per person 6+. And people wonder why cable bills are so high!

Should they reach an agreement with the DBS systems will they pull a SportSouth or CST (making it available to subscribers in the Lakers territory only)?

Does Time Warner Cable control any regional sports networks? I know Comcast has a bunch of regional networks. I don't count SNY as thats part owned by TWC, Comcast, and the Mets. Also I thought most of CA was Comcast territory.

TWC has local sports networks in places like Kansas City and in Upstate New York.

They don't own it here, but TWC has an agreement with the Cleveland Indians for SportsTime Ohio...which is owned by the family which owns the team, the Dolans.

TWC also had the disastrous C-SET in North and South Carolina. They were successful in getting the Charlotte Bobcats fan base to subscribe.

I thought Bobcats games were originally shown on the TWC-run News 14 Carolina channel upon their expansion. The C-SET thing must have been so brief, even media followers like me didn't notice it happening!

I don't know... Is there a big enough fan base of the Kings currently in L.A. to warrant their games being shown on a major station like KCAL? Maybe the best bet would be to have KDOC be the broadcast home of the new Anaheim Kings - after all, KDOC is in Anaheim, right? And I'm sure FSN would be involved at some point, especially if the Lakers are going to be moving to the new TWC-owned cable network.

Sacramento Kings move to OC 'eh? Not without a name change they won't.
The LA Kings hockey club would have a big problem with it.

There were two teams known as the New York Giants for dozens of years up until 1957, when the baseball team left for San Francisco. That's why, even to this day, some folks refer to the football team as "the New York football Giants."

I mean if FSN didn't pick up on some sort of replacement for Lakers Basketball on their schedule, they would surely leave a gaping hole in their schedule! ;) Wonder how the parent company, Fox Sports, thinks about losing the biggest asset on their So Cal sports channel. What will their justification to keep charging mad prices for FSN be? It'll be a tragic lost for FSN West as they revolve their network around Lakers basketball, they don't even bother to show a locally produced sports news show anymore unless its after Lakers B-Ball for crying out loud!

And of course, the baseball and football St. Louis Cardinals existed together for decades - until the football team moved to Arizona.
