Time Warner to take a $25 BILLION Hit

Time Warner to take a $25 BILLION Hit

http://www.newsweek.com/id/178367

Time Warner is also taking an "impairment charge" of some $25 billion, essentially arguing that its cable, publishing, and AOL businesses are not worth what the company was claiming they were worth as recently as November. The company also disclosed that lower advertising revenues at its publishing and AOL divisions would contribute to a 2008 loss and that it would be increasing its reserves by $40 million to protect itself against cash-strapped cable customers who fail to make their payments.

I guess TW saw this coming a long way off .... why TW raised my BASIC cable rates yet AGAIN.....

They've added NO channels to my Basic package...... some channels have even moved to other tiers.... BUT THEY KEEP RAISING MY RATES !!!!!!

When TW flipped makets with Comcast a few years ago, my bill for Basci cable was around $10/month.

But NOW..... that same Basic service with TW, is around $18/Month ! ! !

WHAT AN INCREASE ---- AT THE VERY BASIC LEVEL ----

THANKS FOR ********* THE LITTLE GUYS AND GALS TW !!!!

You're getting what you deserve TW !

Here in Owensboro, KY, one has the option (just recently added) of "Limited Basic" through TW for $16.16 plus tax and fees (so it's more like $25). All "Limited Basic" offers is the broadcast channels, local access and C-SPAN and C-SPAN 2.

Your next option is "Classic Cable," and that is $56.16 ... again plus tax and fees. You don't WANT to know what digital can cost you if you bundle with phone and internet. It's that bad.

Now you know why my household gets our TV digitally over the air!

TW just calls ours "Basic", but it's the same, the CSPAN channels, the local channels, and the Govt/Ed Access channels, and with TW, NO Mini-Weather channel......

On 1/1/07 my basic rate with TW as $10.01

Since then the Basic rates have gone up three times in 2 years:

$12.99

$15.95

And Now.....

$17.99 (Plus Taxes and Fees !)

All those MANY years that we had Cable in this town.....

And the rate for Basic stayed about the same.....

But not now.... Thanks for NOT watching out for Me -- FCC !

TW is absolute garbage... Nothing good about them!!

AOL should buy them out and turn the company around!!

The cheapest 3way bundle (tv, phone, internet) is $124.95/mo here in San Diego, how much is it where you are?

This is not Time Warner Cable...which is now spun off completely from Time Warner...this is the (now former) parent Time Warner (of Time Magazine, Turner Broadcasting, HBO, and AOL fame).

The magazines and AOL are the problem. No one pays for print when (in many instances) you can read online for free. Then there is AOL (another topic for another board). Ad revenues are down across all platforms due to the recession. Since Time Warner Cable is no longer a part of Time Warner, anything after the spinoff is not on the parent TW's books.

If you read the article...one of the issues is a company that rented a few floors from the Time Warner corporate headquarters in New York...Lehman Brothers. We all know about what happened to them.

Repeating...Time Warner no longer owns Time Warner Cable.

I don't know if this is a rumor or not, but I heard that the only division of TIme Warner which made money in '08 (and is expected to do well again in '09) is Turner Broadcasting.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

No not quite. TW took a hit with AOL which was a loss and one of the worst things it could have done from day one. They still make money in a number of areas. But fear not, it's what's known as a non-cash book write down based on non-operating items including the legal judgment against TBS and lease restructuring of their NY building, so will do little to affect the company. It's still doing strong operational wise considering the economy.

That TBS issue had to do with the sale of the Atlanta Hawks (NBA) and the Atlanta Thrashers (NHL) to a local group a few years back.

The economy is getting everyone. Time Warner will do fine once the economy bounces back.
