Tips on attracting more loyal listeners

No matter what form it's in, radio is all about the music. Music does something to just about everyone. Over the last couple of years I've learned a few things about how to attract not just more listeners, but loyal listeners, the kind that spread the word! I figured that in this thread we could all share something as we all know more listeners= more advertisers.

Tip #1

Offer free airplay to local bands. Local bands have local followers and giving them some airtime means they will spread the word to their following to listen to them play on your station!

Tip#2

Contests! Everyone loves the chance to win something, and it's also a great way to get local businesses involved. You could offer the free exposure to a business in exchange for sponsoring your contest. There really are alot of creative opportunities here, I won't give away to much but use your imagination!

Tip#3

Do Live shows on location. For those with the capability, doing a live show on location Always draws a crowd! Whether your doing it in front of the local carwash or wherever, there is no quicker way to create instant buzz than the live format! I myself love doing live shows and local bars, restaurants, nightclubs and every other brick and mortar business you can think is a potential outlet!

Those are just a few for now, no matter what your station is about, it takes hard work and hustle! I look forward to watching this thread progress!

Great post and solid advice... Having done media work for bands for years I knew the instant potential of playing music of unsigned artists and on weekends we do a show called Crank It or Tank It and bands can send in tracks we put together sets and our listeners via the web site tell us if we should Crank It or Tank It, songs who earn a Crank It get continued spins while those that Tank It are left to submit a new track... Participation is high because bands get their supporters involved because nobody wants to tank...

The live show thing sounds like it would be a hoot, are these live over the air shows or are you taping the event for playback? I have the ability to do remotes if I record them to our Multitrack unit, but not sure I have the ability to do live as my mobile internet can be sketchy at best...

i have done a couple of "live remote remotes"..did a three hour show from my home for a fund raiser for a friend of mine in dyer tenn. they set up a PA system in the hall, plugged a laptop in the mixer, and logged on my site..it went over without a hitch considering all the possibilities once may imagine over the internet.event raised over 20K for the charity. the same friend had my show on over in north carolina for a political fund raiser for a couple of hours..i'm tossing things around in my head as how to make $$$$$ with this idea..love the fact i dont have to leave the house..and only teen feet from the cooler..lol..i get an average of 200 hits per night on my stream with about 25 or so loyal listeners,..95% of which are friends of mine..but am picking up new listners as they spread the word as well as facebook posts from them about the show.,,seems to be working pretty well considerng i only do it fri and sat nights from 6 til midnight..but the remote thing is what has really piqued my interest..
