TIS Gridlock: 1610 in Rochester

The NY State DOT and the NY State Thruway Authority (as well as the FCC) probably should have coordinated a bit more on the decision to put the TIS in Webster on 1610 and then allow the NY State Thruway to launch their own for Rochester-area thruway exits on the same frequency from down near Victor. The result is hellish interference, with the Thruway station bleeding through during the day all the way into Brighton (and in the background even further north than that).

The problem would not be so acute if the DoT decided not to consistently use their downtown Rochester frequency of 910 consistently for eastside road projects. As recently as two months ago, DoT warning signs on 490 on the east side were advising motorists to tune to 1610, not the closer 910, for traffic information. Resulting reception was a mixed bag then, when Libby Pataki was still pitching NY farm markets on the I Love NY Traveller PSA's for the thruway station while the DoT was trying to tell people to avoid the 490 Genesee River overpass.

At the moment, the Thruway station is winning the reception war (listen for the tri-tone touchtones prior to station ID every 4-5 minutes) with continuous weather announcements (recorded by themselves, not NOAA's NWS) and pitches for E-ZPass.

...and don't forget the flame throwin' 1580 in Cheektowaga!

My personal fave is the new 1580 AM in Cheektowaga...THE station for people who are "going places" and want to know what the Red Zone is for. More of our tax dollars at work, on a band that most people under 50 can't find on their radios. Move over WECK--there's some real AM band competition out there on Genesee, and it's radio every bit as riveting as a call from "Teresa" the WBEN talkshow troll!
