'Tis Halloween, after all!

Today being Halloween, I got to thinking about how WNAK's studios ended up being located in a former funeral home when Bob Neilson ran it, and how their prime demographic in the book was listed as: "55 to dead". :D

Then I thought about how, on one occassion, the subject of ghosts came up on WARD, and apparently one of them didn't much care for the discussion, and popped a fuse out of the power box, shutting the station down for ten minutes!
As I recall, Sam Ligouri tried to place it back in, but was unable to do so.

So... all of this made me wonder what other ghostly and ghoulish tales might be told regarding the radio business. Perhaps some of you here know of some?

And of course, I wondered if someone out there in radioland might be using the call letters W BOO!
and you know what?
There is such a station! In Morganfield, Kentucky, but it's not on the air! 8)

There is a KBOO in Portland Oregon, though. And it's doing a spooktacular job for the folks out there.

I worked at WNAK in 1990-91 doing nights (6P-12A), and let me tell you that the old former funeral home freaked me out on more than one occasion.

Bob Nielson had an apartment on the third floor, right above the studio, and I always heard noises that sounded like someone was walking up there, even when I knew that Nielson was at home in Kingston. A couple of times, an old radio that Bob had in the apartment would suddenly turn itself on (it had a on-off knob that couldn't just inadvertently be tripped); I would call Bob and ask what to do, and he would have me go upstairs and turn the radio off for him. Other times, in the basement, a cold draft would find its way through the room (during the hot summer) that would give me chills. I am convinced the place was haunted.

My only other "ghost stories" happened at the old WILK building on Franklin Street, but the noises I heard actually turned out to be a homeless person that climbed in through a window and made a shelter for himself in the basement.

Thanks for the response. I kind of got that vibe from the funeral home myself on the few occassions I visited WNAK, and that was during the day when people were there!
It doesn't surprise me that it was haunted. Did Bob believe there was a ghost, turning on the radio, or did he write it off as something else?

Mac, you know that I know radio, I have to agree with you that, to this day, and alllll of the radio stations I've worked for I've ran across a few, and while working alone at nights, some of the thing's I've seen and heard still leave me wondering to this day that I strongly believe most stations have some sort of haunting,...... Namely, WSQV when they were still in Berwick, very spooky old two story building.......

there were some spooky things at the old wbax studio on union st in w.b. the control room was on the 2nd floor, but up on the 3rd floor there were sounds, and weird things that went on up there every weekend.nobody ever went up to check it out, but every weekend you would hear strange sounds, and then one night i went up to the 3rd floor, and discovered what it was, hold on to your hats guys.. it was"THE IS GOOD GIBBONS POLKA WEEKEND show"

I worked at WNAK in the 80's and Ron Schatt told me once about the time he was scared by Mike Lee while they were working to convert the funeral home to the station. Seems there was a coffin left behind and one day Mike got to the station before Ron...decided to lay in the coffin and opened the lid as Ron walked by....

Bob never gave me an explanation for the radio turning itself on some nights, but I sure thought it was a spirit. I used to get freaked out a lot at that place!

Never had the pleasure of working there, Chucker, but I'll take your word for it. Also, I don't think we ever had a spooky vibe at KXP, since it was a brand new studio. In fact, that place almost seemed too sterile at times...
