Titans in the Zone; Vandy Throws Their Flag(ship) to 97.1

As Citadel moves the Titans from KDF to GFX, Vandy calls a foul on the play. Wanting to be in a situation where Titans programming would never have the opportunity to pre-empt them, Vandy's jumped ship to 97.1.

Wow. This will hurt Vandy far more than the Zone. It'll be like the Commodore's ship falling of the side of the flat earth and never being heard from again.

Okay, not really that bad, but I had never been much of a Vandy fan until the Zone started carrying their games. Being up front and center where sports fans are already listening really went a long way toward increasing exposure for the Commodores. Not to mention the huge ratings gap between the two stations. At least now Preds games can always be heard at 104.5.

While most all of Vandy's coverage comes via ISP, it will nonetheless be interesting to see if RQQ can commit the kind of resources and people to Vandy that the Zoners did. If I were Cumulus, now that Vandy and 75 percent of NASCAR races are at 97.1, I'd see this as an opportunity to consider a format change. It would be fun to see some actual competition in local radio again.

I just read the Tennessean article. I'm thinking format change as well. They could still keep Bob & Tom, run syndicated Fox Sports programming, and run their sports stuff.

When you try to be the FLAGSHIP STATION for EVERY SPORTS TEAM in town, someone is going to suffer. I don't think there will be an overlap of Titans games with Vandy Football, but there may be with Titans games and programming with Vandy basketball, like there is now with Vandy sports and Predator games. It to hard in this age to try to be the Flagship Station with every sports team in a single market.

Oh jetfli....Vandy fans will find the games no matter what station....But Vandy paid a lot of money to be on The Zone. Not good for the bottom line I would guess..

You are right, of course. However, Vandy was the one who has winning the time slot battles. It's only been in the last two years that the call-in show was moved by half an hour on Monday or shifted to Sunday on occasion. Believe me, Vandy reaped far more benefits from being on the Zone to be miffed by something like that.

I come from a day when radio stations with competing formats, morning and afternoon newspapers, and TV news departments tried to out do each other, and the winner was the consumer. That's the basis of my wish to see a format change at 97.1, just because I'd like to see some real competition get going in the market again. But, Shadow, rock and sports works fine for me as well. I just don't think most rock fans are going to be thrilled to hear Mac talking with a Vandy coach between Zeppelin cuts.

Now I can see the wisdom and benefits of having the Titans on the Zone. However, seems to me that the cluster had the best of both worlds with the set up they had. So the big question is, which move was first, Vandy from the Zone, or the Titans to the Zone? I've heard conflicting stories. If the Titans were moved first, why were they moved from KDF? Has KDF's big signal miffed nearby Titans Radio affiliates? Will the Performance Racing Network move to KDF? Will WNSR be the only source for other Sunday afternoon NFL games now? I asked a former co-worker who's now over on Rutledge Hill and "mum" was the word (gotta love station loyalty in this day of corporate radio).

Keep the Rock and Sports.Men like them both. Don't think it's been done in Nashville.

Not commercially...but when I was at Volunteer State as a DJ/sportscaster on 88.5 once a week, one of my buddies and I hosted a show called "Sounds & Sports" (hence my screen name) where we played two or three songs (90s KDF meets Lightning 100 meets The Rock) and then went into whatever we wanted to talk about (NBA, MLB, NFL, etc..) then updated the weather and campus news, played PSAs and started a new segment for three hours.

Most of the time on weekends during the respective seasons, I was one of the "Voices of the Pioneers" on basketball and baseball broadcasts (after about a year or so I was "The Voice of the Pioneers" or at least the players, coaches and station collegues thought so)

So it has been done to a certain extent...I wish I could have copyrighted the idea for "Sounds & Sports" and pitched it to ABC's Shark Tank so it could become a 24 hour network or syndicated program...or maybe I can...how do I do that?...

Answering one of my own questions: A local reporter tells me it was indeed Vandy who moved first. Now it makes Vandy's statement of seeking "special attention" seem really shallow. Vandy's basketball team gets on a bit of a run and suddenly the school forgets who's been instrumental in reviving local fan support to extend beyond the alumni group. Of course the Zoners will still be talking about Vandy because they talk local sports, but hopefully not as much. Maybe 104.5 can carry an SEC Game of the Week now.

So now what happens when a Titans game and a PRN Sunday race conflict? Does the race go to KDF?

Didn't Cumulus already have an FM sports talk station - oh, wait, that's right, they were so unable to pull upward of a 0.1 share, that virtually nobody noticed! I agree, keep "the Tower" erect! :D

I miss the way it was many Years ago when 1510 WLAC carried Vanderbilt games. I'm a Tennessee fan,but I listen to Vandy games whenever I get a chance to.
