TIVO Infomercial

I was flipping channels after 3:45AM Eastern this morning and on the ION Network I see they're showing previews of shows coming to the CBS Network this fall. After showing previews of 3 shows they talk about a few new features of TIVO. And then after that it came up on the screen "The Preceding Paid Program was for TIVO Subscribers."

This seemed a little weird to me. Anyone else see this? We don't have TIVO at my Mom's house.

That infomercial is quietly recorded by TIVO DVRs and then the individual previews are shown to subscribers across the month. This way the bandwith usage is greatly reduced. You will find these infomercials on Discovery Channel too.

When I record shows intentionally, they find a way to insert a way to record shows being advertised. And of course TiVo advertises shows not only on the main page but on show pages too. These ads frequently work. Though if the show is already on he air I'm already recording it.

I'm dreading setting up the new one. Any upgrade is more complicated than I think it will be.

They've run those specials for years. They used to appear scrambled to anyone watching live, but then your TiVo would decode it and play back on demand, such as on TiVo showcase or if you clicked "thumbs up" during certain commercials while watching regular shows.

There were two Tivo paid programs in the past - Teleworld (promos, commercials, other features for TIVOs) and Advanced (which was a scrambled picture - which had listing data, sent off to the Tivo's, usually early Monday mornings. There would be a crawl saying "there's nothing wrong with your television".) The Advanced went off the air around 2004 or 2005, since more TIVOs could get listing data from the internet and other source; Teleworld still airs each week in the overnight hours on Wed or Thur, depending on the network (ION or Discovery).
Around 2000 it used to be called "Tivo Takes" and also aired on DSC (early Saturday mornings) and occasionally in an overnight infomercial slot on the PAX stations.
