TJ 98.7

is this show for very young children? I can't imagine my 5th grader being amused by this. It's one thing to be "family friendly" but this sounds painfully G-rated

No, the major-market professional is not doing Raffi.

It's a clean general-interest talk show. Not as dirty as a rock show, and not as banal as an AC show. But I can't do it justice with words. Google him. Find his affiliate list. Stream it.

The non-pro board members are much closer to actual listener profiles than any of us pros.

Of an actual target audience? Ehhhhh…..we’ve seen quite often that’s not frequently the case.

Closer than we are. Those of us in the business are much more aware of subtleties in programming than the typical listener. We can't help but psychoanalyze every move by every station. (Admit it, Grandpa Simpson ... you do that just like the rest of us.)

The comments from non-pros are from people who are more typical radio listeners. They may hear something they don't like, and they will comment on it, but they also have just enough psuedo-knowledge to make unrealistic suggestions in the process.

Wasn't TJ Taormina host of the morning show (with Loren Raye) at the now defunct AMP103.3 WODS, Boston?
Yes. He had a decent following here in Boston while up against Matty on Kiss, but the station was never able to catch up to Kiss. He left when Amp flipped to variety hits Big 103.

Yeah, and there ain’t an advertiser around who wants to spend money to reach me. The over analysis and trying to find some ulterior motive for every single thing…and the whole age and gender thing….doesn’t exactly suggest boards (regardless of topic) are “average” audiences.

A further legal point: Good Karma, which "owns" the call letters by virtue of them being on 1050, had to grant "permission" for Emmis to change the calls on 98.7 from WRKS in 2012 to facilitate the LMA. I would be surprised if that permission contained a requirement to abandon the calls once the LMA ended; it's more likely that GK "assumed" that to be the case ... or it was simply overlooked at the time.
You're forgetting that Disney facilitated the LMA with Emmis in 2012, and as such it was Disney who initiated the call sign change from WRKS to WEPN-FM (though Emmis had to apply for it). IIRC, that took effect a few days after the format change.

If Disney did the contract, you can bet they were very careful about trademarks and call letters. They were very specific in the radio sale to Citadel. They've managed to hold on to Mickey Mouse for almost 100 years. They are the master of trademarks. So I'm pretty sure what's happening with WEPN is spelled out in the contract, and Craig Karmazin knows what he bought.

Exactly. Even if I forgot to insert Disney's name into my earlier post, whatever language concerning the call letters must still be in force, or Emmis would have changed them the instant the LMA ended.

Wait, so does this mean that 98.7 has to keep using the WEPN-FM call sign for the time being?

Define "has to keep". Emmis is the licensee and only changed the calls as requested at the time of the original LMA. They can change the calls anytime they want now that the LMA has ended. That they haven't indicates that they are not required to change them by whatever language was in the LMA about that. And if they don't have to, might as well wait until they find a buyer and let same choose the new calls.

If TJ at 98.7 didn’t do well, they should bring back “Kiss-FM” at 98.7 as WRKS for the first time since 2012 when it left the airwaves to go back to being Urban AC.

As we've already said several times, Emmis sold the rights to Kiss-FM. So no, it legally can't do that.

That company has no clue what they're doing.

Dave and Chuck the Freak exist, and they put TJ on an active rock station? That's not even close to being format-appropriate.
You do realize there's a lot more that goes in to choices in syndication?

The show you mentioned has a whole TWO affiliates not owned by the company that owns the show. TJ is on over 70 in less than a year. It might be financial. It could be their network sales person is really good at his job. But stations want to carry TJ for whatever the reason may be. Also WABY has no ratings, which means it will bring in nearly nothing in revenue so some syndicators won't even talk to a station about a show in those circumstances. Then there's circumstances where group owners only will use content from one network. For example, Connoisseur and Seven Mountains Media only take programming on their music stations from Compass Media Networks.

And TJ's affiliate doood is.. well, a bulldog!

I would honestly look at the show if i had a place for it.. because i know id get excellent customer service and the show seems to be doing good in its intended demos and ratings where stations who get ratings run the sun
