TLC's 'Jon & Kate' marathon ends with messy season premiere

After being on since late Friday afternoon (I guess with the exception of the overnight infomercials), Jon & Kate Plus 8 started it's new season last night. 'Messy' is putting it mildly. TLC billed it as an 'extended' season premiere, and sure enough, it ran 1:15 instead of an hour or :30. I think the hour would have sufficed, had it just been about the 6 younger kids' birthday. Added, though, were trips to stores where paparazzi were waiting, and the usual couch conversations--usually done by both parents jointly--much of which were done solo by Jon or by Kate. As it turns out, Jon actually quit his IT job (that he had when the series first started) 2 years ago, so now neither of them are working outside the home for income other than what relates to the show or books they've published. During one of the trips to a store, a younger boy could be heard in the van before they got out asking where the paparazzi is, and Kate told him not to say that word. So even the now-5-year-olds know that not everyone with a camera aimed at them is from TLC. There were even paparazzi across a creek from a park where the younger kids' birthday took place. Sad. The future for the parents (after being happy but hectic up to now) seems to be in doubt, although it was pretty vague as to what really might have happened (I'm not sure what to believe) since the end of the previous season, it doesn't look like it will be a 'tune in tomorrow' neat/tidy solution for them. As for the kids, it's probably early to guess what will take place for them in their growing years, but the words 'normal life' will probably not apply, especially if they are in a grocery store and happen to see one of their parents pictured at the checkout on a rag-mag. I've heard the show is the most popular on TLC, so it looks like the media circus won't be over anytime soon.

That's almost like saying 'Who are Kris Allen and Adam Lampert?' I don't know. I don't watch American Idol, but lots of others do.

One answer to your question would be: They are 1 of only 15 couples in the US with living sets of sextuplets.

Found this from the Today show: http://tv.msn.com/tv/article.aspx?news=411054&GT1=28103
There is a video link on the same page with clips from last night's ep and from interviews the couple have done separately and together on Today.

After rereading what I wrote, I want to point out that my intent wasn't to slam your post. It was basically paraphrasing a comment that Jay Leno made to great applause - and one I agreed with. Standing in a grocery line, I see a picture of "Jon and Kate" and my wife and I were thinking "who are these people?" Leno made the same comment and we laughed.........

By the way, I didn't know the last names of the American Idol clowns either. Not a great analogy to prove a point with (at least with me). Only knew their first names thanks to periodic headlines posted on the Drudge Report last week. ::)

No offense taken...and I didn't know they were a Leno punch line either. Sorry about the analogy, couldn't think of any other reality examples that SO many people fall all over themselves for besides the Idol contestants.

Not sure of the national numbers, but in the Phoenix market, the ratings for the season premiere were extraordinary. It may have been the highest rated program in the history of TLC.

How do those numbers compare with The Deadliest Catch? I heard somewhere that DC was cable's most watched show.

numbers can prove anything,
homer simpson said 43% people know that,
(cat burgler episode : )
.....but wwe.Monday Night RAW alwaaaays
Boooosts the ratings of their #1watched cable show;
and ironically enough, use the (actual/factual) #numbers,
to say wwe.raw, (this past week) had more viewers than
*ANY* primetime,NBC show..... interesting since
wwe. would *count on* nbc for

1. the x/FL - yes, it flopped but it first had to be tried out
2. and , more importantly, sat. night's main event....
(and the main event, which was the same thing , just airing on friday)/once....i believe.

WWF/E's The Main Event aired on NBC, Friday nights at these times:

February 5, 1988 in Indianapolis (Hogan loses his first WWF world title amid controversy) [LIVE]
February 3, 1989 in Milwaukee (The Megapowers of Hogan and Savage break up) [LIVE]
February 23, 1990 in Detroit (Savage in a match with guest referee James "Buster" Douglas) [LIVE]
November 23, 1990 in Fort Wayne, IN (was supposed to be a SNME, but was trimmed to 60 minutes)
February 1, 1991 in Macon, GA (tag team battle royal [?])
