Why do some of the cd's have R as the last letter and others have N? seems most of the R's are older versions of songs.If you check the list of the 220 disc library you'll find quite a few R's but mosly N's.i've heard different stories about the tunes on some of those cd's.

I believe they re-mastered some of the songs to reduce the noise and the ones with N are Noise Free. When a station changes format & has a library like this that's no longer needed, what are their options in selling the library? Is it legal to sell these things on Ebay? I see an occasional GoldDisc there but have no idea if it's legit to actually list them or not.

i just bought the 220 cd set half price.like 1155.00 delivered.i'll check some of those cd's especially the R versions.you sign a license agreement for your station. only thing that perturbed me was since i had the whole library, after i talked to Prophet they suggested maybe TM would loan me a hard drive with the active 1012 songs.NOPE, they would not do that, but i could buy it for a grand,Now does that make walking around sense?Anyway after a few hous of ripping all 220 cd's and a bottle of Crown(ha) i finally got the job done.Why pay a grand for the hard drive when, i have all 220cd's for 1155.00.DUH? the songs i have checked mostly on N cd's sound awesome..Now i know you can get the Halland collection cheaper, but aren't they on MP2 on the hard drive?Not sure about their cd's..

For our NCE we have just about every Gold Disc format (oldies to CHR and everything in between). We now have them all ripped in to our automation system and weeded out all of the duplicates.

We get the TM Hit Discs every week to keep current and I've noticed since they merged with Jones that they no longer "hook you up" with certain things. We had a Hit Disc get losted in the mail, when the MD called to get a replacement they said they would "invoice us" for the missing disc. In the past they would send a replacement disc out with no questions asked. This stuck me as odd, not to mention we have spent thousands of dollars for music through TMC.

I hope these are just isolated incidents..

Folks, here is the actual information.

When GoldDiscs were first released in 1985, they were first generations. GD1's usually have the song information printed in blue on the CD.

When any of those GoldDiscs were remastered, they were called GD2's. GD2's typically have the song information printed in red on the CD. GD2's are also known as "GoldDisc-R's", hence the "R" at the end of the disc number.

The third generation discs end with "N", which means "NoNoise", the technology they use to clean up songs. These discs are also known as GD3's, and generally have the song information printed in black. They also have the "NoNoise" logo.

And no, you can't sell these things on E-Bay. Each and every disc is stamped with "For broadcast only".

Well, you better jump on ebay and tell all the folks to cut it out! Sometime during last few months I saw at least quite a few Gold Discs go on auction (a couple of small segemented libraries, too). I usually just wait til their blowout sale if I need any.

Officially, those CD's cannot be sold, but neither are record company "promo copies" but anyone who's been in a used CD store has seen them by the hundreds.
Is Tm going to walk in and take your CD's?, very unlikely.
There are any number of companies that are now selling hard drives full of music for at or under a dollar a cut for use in broadcast.
I have also heard of stations with one format of music on hard drive trading with someone else who has a different format...the thing is, once it is mastered onto the hard drive, as long as the source material was good, every copy after that will be an exact copy...and just as good as the original -
There was a time not too long ago that music libraries for radio stations was a huge expense, nowadays, some companies will "throw in" a free music library as a bonus for purchasing other things like software or jingles. Even if you don't need it today, it never hurts to ask...once you got it - you got it!

I know of an instance where a station changed format, offered the CD library to the departing air staff and part of that was the 200+ Goldisc oldies library. I suppose whoever grabbed that has something that is essentially worthless from a legal standpoint, but worth a pretty penny if it could be sold without litigation ensuing...

On that basis, does anyone have a library of 60s - 90s that they want to donate to a small community (non-profit) station in NZ?

I think I know what you are saying, but these disk have been out there for years, and I know many people, including myself who have a small pile of them laying about due to format changes, or just digging them out of the trash, after consolidations

And individually, I never dealt with TM, so what obligation do I have to them, not to sell the old CD's?? Those radio companies disappeared years ago, and I don't think the CD's were marked in any way to indicate where they came from. Not to mention, is TM around anymore?

So, unless there is something I am missing, or TM/Jones wants to offer a buyback program...what's the difference?

As I see it, it is not like SS32 cards, where you would have to sell the unlock key with the card, since you would have to sell a specific, identifiable key with the card to make them work. A music CD seems like a CD to me.
