Starved for a change, loving Internet radio for some time now, I have to admit something. Was visiting Tom Cuddy (yes our old buddy) and his lovely (and hilarious) wife Lisa out at their spread a few months back, and Tom...knowing how I don't often play or stand for conventional anything in this business...asked that all important question:
'With internet radio around, are you still listening to local (brick/morter) radio Bill?'
Well...YES...of course, it's in our blood right? Geez, I'd be lying if I didn't tell him I'm a big talk fan and Yes, WABC is one of those places I hang out (and yep, PRO/HJJ too)...and that I still love AM/FM Oldies that's local like my own show, so the local shows get my ear too...and YES if I hear a jock from our younger days YOU BET I'M ON IT...anyone surviving this business gets a gold star from moi.
BUUUUUUT....I'd by lying if I didn't admit to giving kudos to some of those internet savvy dudes and dudettes who are my favorite addictions; the one I'm stuck on is in Europe...and it's jazz/bossa/nujazz/soul blend has me utterly hooked, so much so that the cover artists doing traditional songs doesn't even seem to upset me. And, inbetween the tunes a very sexy voice with bell tones (5 of them in thirds up the music scale) says 'VVV...LOUNGE-PUNT-FM...LISTEN AND RELAX'...yep, it's German, generating I think in Vienna, Austria...and it's on more than anything else. The only equivalent in the states is the oh so sexy voice Carribean-laced drop inbetween jazz 'n more...'ha ha ha haaaa.....smooth jazz....K Y OOOO Tee.....(KYOT)...Phoenix'; melts me every time.
Maybe part of the online addiction for me is that it's where I find 'sexy'. It's like fine wine, inviting and satisfying. Radio these days is so utilitarian and numbers driven (not to mention that hardly a breathing body exists in a live studio) that the creativity, the fun, the SEXY, is not much on the dial's landscape. Radio in our younger days had the sexy there, you can name the voices from the past...some still around in places here and there. Then you run into Sarah Owens (WNLC-FM New London) who has always been a female fave to listen to. They're sexy on the air...not slutty...and like that fine wine, great to sample.
One of the best things that could happen is to have our announcers unleash their talent around here and see who comes up on top of the sexy, or the funny, or the 'best bud'. The live wires left around here need to have the ability to show us all what they have. It's what I love about my little perch in Putnam CT and gives me a great opportunity to connect with folks, be a part of the community, and make a name for the station.
Me, Sexy? Uhh...no...but I can do it if enticed. Still more the 'best bud' type.
