To Fortmill and Anyone Else Interested (Some Thoughts About WJAM AM)

I may not be a big fan of Adult Urban but this station continues to be for the birds. The sound quality still has an awful hum in it and you can't even get the station, outside the city limits and/or most parts of the city, once the sun goes down.

What a shame this is for the Adult Urban crowd. They expect better than this. I feel sorry for them and hope that someday they'll get an FM station once again.

This "Graveyard" signal is a joke and has no business even playing music. They should dump this current format and go all talk and/or shut it down completely. The audience they're wanting to reach, deserves better than this.

Like someone else recently stated, it wouldn't hurt Mr. Hank Sanders and his Imani Broadcasting Company to check into the possibility of snatching Tom Joyner from this station and putting him on a more powerful FM signal. I'm now begging anyone associated with WBFZ to take me up on this and snag him, for the good of his listeners here in Selma Alabama. They deserve better than 1340 AM anyway.

Just my two cents.

P.S. I still don't expect the Senator and His broadcasting company to snag "The Fly Jock" but it doesn't hurt to dream now does it?

How did 1340 do whan they were Oldies as WMRK? I've only heard them once, and that was at this time last year when I was putting up campaign signs on Hwy 80 from Cuba (Alabama, of course) to Phenix City. Then they were playing two things at once -some type of public affairs programming and Elton John at the same time.

Dude, you do know that you were breaking the law, right?  Nothing is to be placed on the state's right of way.  Campaign signs go on private property.

I never knew I was breaking the law - I try to be a law abiding citizen. However, at least I wasn't the only one who was. There were many times when the police would pass by while in the act, I guess it is something most do not enforce.

Speaking of AM 1340... what is their nighttime power?

Scott Alexander has recently went to the translator warehouse and purchased a translator that is being moved into Selma as we speak. Bet it will rebroadcast WJAM 1340. Paid $30,000,plus the engineering costs and construction costs.

Could it be the 95.7 move-in from Eufaula, that's now in Letohatchee? (A small town located near Montgomery, in rural Lowndes County)

Inquiring minds wants to know.

P.S. Where will this station be located, if it does move to Selma and how much power will it broadcast with? Just curious.

R.D.P.,

You are very mistaken about the "hum" on WJAM-AM. You apparently have a cheap AM tuner or you are near power lines with your radio. The station you refer to as "graveyard" has several very happy listeners that we hear from everyday.

You also apparently have no life because all it seems you do with your time is sit on this site under the shield of "R.D.P." and talk about a business you obviously know nothing about. I have read many of your post and it is a shame people interested in Selma radio have to read such ignorance.

Get your facts right before making comments,
Paul Alexander

Why not move your radio away from electric lines close to your home. Or maybe you need a new one. I have several radios both in my car and home (including a $5.00 little unit I purchased at Family Dollar several years ago). There is no hum on WJAM. Even though WJAM is AM, I still listen as does quite a few people I know here in Selma. From listening to the station daily, I hear quite a few commercials on it, including some pretty impressive businesses. So no doubt, being on the AM band hasn't hurt. As far as Tom Joyner's show is concerned, it's been on WJAM since it went on the air, back in the mid 90s. It's still a fan favorite, as I have heard 105.3 listeners mention what Tom talked about that day, during its talk show. R.D.P., why do you listen or care, since you say you don't like Urban AC music anyway. If you really want to hear a low AM signal, try listening to the station in Marion. Most AMs at night have a weak signal, don't they? Always have. So what's the big deal? From reading various radio magazines (including this one) there are still lots of music formatted AM stations that are doing quite well in both listenership and commercials. Every rating period, the number one or two rated station, for example,in Memphis is an AM with an Urban AC format. Leave WJAM alone. It seems to be doing just fine, even though it's on the AM band. Selma adult African Americans are still loyal to it.

Thanks for the response.  I do live behind some power lines anyway.  Far as I know, my two bedroom radio(s) are far away from them.  Glad that this station is doing very well.  Hope they'll have continued success.

If I said anything that was out of line, please accept my apology.

I've always been fascinated by the radio business and enjoyed my stint when I was announcing.  Hope I'll get to do it again.  I miss it very much.
