Re: To: LOTUS BROADCASTING CORP.

Whoa Nellie! Does this mean KLAV's brokered programming is going away? That would be a big blow to the community--you know Lotus wouldn't put anything useful on that frequency. I *love* the mishmash of programs KLAV's aired over the last decade.

It's actually a quarter of a century. KLAV has been brokered since 1987.

My guess is that Lotus will keep 1340 Spanish and switch KLAV to Spanish.

Re: To: LOTUS BROADCASTING CORP.

KLAV has done stellar public service to Las Vegas over the years, airing programs like Kaibigan, the Street Harmony Revue, Learning to Fly, Ink Session, GJ the DJ, Duke and the Doctor, Nights Over Las Vegas with the Commander, Behind the Wheel, Telecom Talk, the German show on Sunday mornings, the Lebanese show with Maroun and that show with the old guy playing hillbilly music and talking up his chili sauce recipe. LV radio wouldn't be the same without all this cool programming.

Why couldn't they give them to me?
What on earth makes you think that Hemishphere Gave the stations away to Lotus for free? I don't know the amounts, but Lotus is paying to buy those stations. It's a free market, if you made a better offer you could have had them. I would not be to worried about format changes if the current formats are successful. Don't automatically assume changes in programming are coming. Brokered programming is reasonably profitable with minimal costs. I would count on vastly improved signals if Lotus moves the current trashed transmitter sites to the state of the art transmitter facility on MLK.

That's a lot of AM signals in one spot. (1100, 1280, 1400 then add 1230, 1340)

Glad it's your site and not mine!

Re: To: LOTUS BROADCASTING CORP.

IMHO the reason that Lotus bought those stations is because KNUU has been sold to a catholic network and has to drop the lucrative brokered shows they've been running. My alma mater, KNUU was making money but it's owner, Biztalk radio was bleeding it dry, they have serious legal problems and had to sell. (long story)

I think Lotus sees an opportunity to pick up some of that business on their newly acquired stations, whch they got for a song.

I wish Lotus luck....I hear they are a good company.

KNUU was off the air for 3 days a week or two ago. A birdie told me they didn't pay the power bill.

Where's your sense of adventure?!
Looking forward to the challenge. the 1280 and 1400 next door have played well with us since we put the appropriate filters on their system.

Re: To: LOTUS BROADCASTING CORP.

The little birdie told you the truth about KNUU being off for 3 days for not paying the power bill. Probably unprecidented in broadcast history. My little Birdie was working there while it happened.
Two hi profile shows canceled as a result.

It's a moot point now as the FCC has just apporved the sale of the station. The whole situation is a sordid story.

No, it's happened before. I know of a TV station that lost it's power due to non-payment. They brought in generators to keep on the air, although that didn't last long due to liens on the tower, building foreclosed, etc.

I'm sure 720 and 1230 will be interested in selling time to shows now on 970. Maybe 670, 790, 1400?

Re: To: LOTUS BROADCASTING CORP.

You guys haven't been here in PA where the rule at Mom and Pop stations is: "The ultimate authority in the radio business is not the FCC...its the power company!" Back in the 80's I remember going over to an FM transmitter site in Pittston, PA with the PD at the request of the power company. The PD pulled out his credit card and saved the station from going off the air! This happens a lot in small market radio....but in Vegas...ouch! ::)

Re: To: LOTUS BROADCASTING CORP.

Some outside trade sources are saying the FCC has approved the transfer of the two stations to Lotus, but I haven't seen it in the Daily Digest yet. We still need to pay the remaining money, sign the papers and then go see what we have bought. Do not expect many immediate changes.

Re: To: LOTUS BROADCASTING CORP.

Don't expect any serious changes in KLAV's programming. DO expect serious improvement in it's signal coverage.
