To Lyle Dean

Dear Lyle:

Even though I've never had the pleasure of meeting you in person, you actually got me into radio...and, I wanted to say "thanks!"

In the early 70s, when I was a scrawny six-year-old in New Orleans, I'd be up late at night DX-ing the big AM signals when I really should have been asleep. One night, this incredibly H-U-G-E voice filled the speakers of my radio with "I'm Lyle Dean...W-L-S News!" To a six-year-old, hearing that smooth, polished, deep and professional voice was like listening directly to God...if God had lived in Chicago.

For my 7th birthday, I asked for a cassette-recorder and a nice mike. :)

You don't actually realize the awesome power of the medium until you reflect on how a single moment in time affected one child's future and his ultimate career choice. I chose broadcasting because I wanted to "be like Lyle". Radio has been very good to me and, as payback, I mentor college-radio people to help them develop their skills. It's sort of like "paying it forward".

But, the genesis of this whole journey began thirty-four years ago when I listened to "Lyle Dean...W-L-S Radio!" for the very first time. This is a very long-overdue..."thank you!"

Re:Same to Landecker

I Have the same thoughts for John Landecker.

He will always be a mentor for me. As you, I heard
him when I was a teen and learned a bunch about the
art of communication.

Thanks for the pointers, John!

Re:Same to Landecker

The guys on WLS really did shape a generation of us midwest radio folks.
Landecker, Sirott and JJ Jeffries still ring in my head when I'm on the air from time to time.
Thanks!
