But don't most Mountain Time markets do the early primetime (7-10pm) like Central Time markets? If so, no station in their right mind would put the news on at 6:30 MT.

Then, there is the Arizona Time Zone. I guess we'll get the Pacific feed during the summer and the two hour old feed during the winter.

I'm.... Confused?

I'm confused about this line:

"Broadcasts of the "CBS Evening News" are updated once or twice a month, spokeswoman Kelli Edwards said. Neither CBS nor NBC expect to change their operations in response to ABC."

Huh?
Are they talking about airchecks?
Or was it just a typo?

I'd prefer that the second "World News Tonight" feed be at 7:30 P.M. EST/EDT (5:30 MST/MDT) for the Mountain time zone, with the third, as planned, being at 9:30 ET (6:30 on the West Coast).

And I think it will only be a matter of time before CBS and NBC follow suit.

CBS produces a "Western Edition" of its newscast on those days when breaking news warrants. Otherwise, the West gets the same show viewers back east saw 2-3 hours earlier.

(Same for ABC and NBC at present.)

Re: I'm.... Confused?

Back during the Cronkite era I remember reading about "The CBS Evening News Western Edition"featuring Terry Drinkwater inserting West Coast stories into the recorded newscast. Does seem ridiculous to still have three hour old newscasts running...when thcable competitors can be live.<P ID="signature">______________

10-4--nearly all. I've yet to come across a
MT market running prime 8-11, however there is
at least one that takes prime "live" 6-9pm--
one of the affils in Rapid City, as it is a
virtual satellite of a Sioux Falls station
(the KELO-land cluster, IIRC).

Especially those with the "Wheel Of Torture"
franchise.

Don't forget KPHO-TV Phoenix (CBS) which now
counterprograms Wheel and other syndie fare
with a local 'cast at 6:30.

Being a Mountain Time zone resident...

The local CBS station airs CBS Evening News at 5:00, so it is only half an hour old:) I recall KDBC in El Paso use to air the program at 4:30, as did Wyoming's old ABC affliate KFNB did with ABC World News Tonight. Just some facts there.

Also here in NM Comcast uses the West Coast feed for several cable networks, while the East coast feed on others.

BINGO! I am in Phoenix and arrive home from work at 6:20pm or so. Guess whose newscast I watch every night? KPHO (cue the Enforcer theme music...).

YES! I remember the "CBS Evening News Western Edition with Walter Cronkite in New York...long pause (switch to LA studio)...and Terry Drinkwater in Los Angeles". Terry would be inserted wherever an update was needed on the news stories. (I couldn't remember Terry's name until someone brought this up a few days ago.)

At one point, CBS fed a newscast via satellite to Hawaii. It was the CBS Evening News Hawaii Edition with Walter Cronkite. Don't know if it was actually updated or not. At the time, other newscasts were flown to Hawaii from LA. So, in paradise, you typically saw the evening newscasts early the next morning and the morning newsshows (GMA and Today) in the late afternoons.

Newscast Filmed in New York, Correct?

The 6:30 Newscasts on ABC, CBC, and NBC all originate from New York, right? Just curious.

You mean the 6:30 newscast on CBS. The National on CBC
originates in Toronto, and I believe the first feed goes
to the Maritimes at 10 PM (AST)/9 PM (EST), with each earlier
time zone seeing it at 10 PM local time.

As far as the scheduling of ABC's newscast, I'm with Joseph
Gallant. ABC ought to do a live broadcast to all four time zones:
6:30 (ET)/5:30 (CT), 7:30 (ET)/5:30 (MT), 8:30 (ET)/5:30 (PT).

Apparently that is what they're doing. The AP ran a correction on their first story, which said there would be live broadcasts in Eastern, Central, and Pacific time zones. The AP says correct time zones are Eastern, Mountain, and Pacific.

Actually, this means there will be three airings, but they will be live to the four time zones as you and Joseph suggested.

Then perhaps the AP needs to correct their
correction. Here's a link to the story which
is archived on the ABC News website--

http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/story?id=1373524

--it states the live feeds will be at
6:30pm ET (live ET/CT), 8:30pm ET/5:30pm PT
and 9:30pm ET/6:30pm PT. So unless a MT
station wants to run the show at 4:30 or
6:30 (and this has been discussed elsewhere
on this board) it will still be a delayed
broadcast in the "time zone most networks
forgot" (which has also been discussed in
terms of MT being a small percentage of
total U.S. viewers).

I think you can forget about any Mountain stations
running WNT at 6:30 local time; that's access time
and those stations will surely stick with syndicated
programming. I've heard of stations running WNT
at 4:30 in the past (seems like KGUN/9 Tucson used
to do this), but that seems awfully early; then again,
there are 4 PM local newscasts in the other time zones
(maybe in MT too). No, I think WNT will air at 5:30
(MT), which, as you say, will be a delayed broadcast.
Maybe the Mountain time zone is a small percentage of
total U.S. viewers, but isn't it more fair to give them
a live feed instead of two live feeds to the Pacific
time zone? I think the whole idea of two Pacific feeds
is to get WNT on live in L.A. at 6:30 (PT).

Bingo! In checking program grids just now
for major and medium markets in the Pacific
time zone, mega-market El-Lay is the only
6:30pm airing of WNT.

ABC must think more highly--collectively--
of Las Vegas/San Francisco/Sacramento (airs
at 5:30pm) than they do of 6:00pm markets
San Diego/Portland/Seattle. There was a
sidebar story a few days ago that quoted
a KOMO-TV Seattle exec as saying they would
promo the left coast netcast at 6:00 even if
it was on a half-hour delay and would even
consider moving it to (live at) 5:30.

Of the other (smaller) markets I checked--
Bakersfield/Fresno/Spokane run WNT at 5:30,
Reno airs it at 6:00.

Also keep in mind that ABC owns KGO/7 San Francisco
and KFSN/30 Fresno. You note that both stations
carry WNT at 5:30. ABC is obviously making sure its
o&os get the broadcast live!
