I'm not even sure about how the timing of the release for California King Bed was planned out. Another song of hers was released around the same time, which I believe is still sort of drowning out California King Bed. What's interesting is that at first, I thought "Man Down" wasn't going to be successful, but now it seems as if it's beating "California King Bed"! I've never understood why people released songs that way - there would be a big hit, then you'd start hearing a follow up single that you begin to believe is the main official single, but just when you think it's taking off, you also hear another single surpass it (then sometimes that other song you thought was going to be a second single ends up really being a big third single).
I also never understood how things happen, like when Pitbull's "hey baby" was released; It started off rising slow, and just when I thought it was dying, that's when it started to blow up. As a result, the song, overall, was able to achieve a long life span. I even remember our local station(s) picking it up last year, playing it a little bit, then it seemingly disappeared for a while before it popped back into the playlist and began receiving high spins (in addition to being added to a bunch of stations across the U.S. around the same time it 'came back' on our local station).
