To put it Bluntly... AC's playing the hits before CHR!?

I'm really quite amazed that James Blunt's "You're Beautiful" is FINALLY starting to bubble up on CHR playlists. I thought CHR was going to ignore it totally, as too "adult" and too "British", but I guess late is better than never.

For decades, CHR was on the forefront of getting new hits played on the radio, which only later would "trickle down" to Hot AC and then AC stations, if it fit the format. But in this case it's gone backwards: with the lead of New York's WPLJ, "You're Beautiful" gained Hot AC airplay last summer, and then last fall it took AC stations by storm, and after the month-long Christmas hiatus that most AC stations took, it's still near the top of their weekly spins... and hoorah, a few brave CHRs now dare to give it a chance!

And now, enterprising AC stations have taken the lead with other catchy songs like Daniel Powter's "Bad Day" and Michael Buble's excellent Latin-flavored cover of "Save the Last Dance for Me". I suppose maybe it'll be the dog days of summer before CHR even gives these songs a chance!?

Regardless of what format it might end up on first, hopefully U.S. radio will be open-minded enough to give another young British pop star a chance: Will Young, winner of Simon Cowell's original UK Pop Idol contest, who has released three albums and a string of successful singles in Europe. (Will also happens to be proudly gay, but considering the mainstream popularity of "Brokeback Mountain", that shouldn't be a hindrance to his career over here... hopefully.) Like James Blunt, his voice is also sure to get women of all ages swooning, and of the tracks I've heard so far, I'm most impressed by "Switch It On" -- an uptempo tune that's surprisingly reminiscent of the Escape Club's classic "Wild Wild West" -- and "Leave Right Now", a ballad that has the same man-pouring-his-heart-out-in-front-of-a-microphone sweetness and simplicity as Blunt's "You're Beautiful".

I've listened to that "Save the last dance for me," and I just can't see that going CHR at all.

Nobody here (CHR) is touching You're Beautiful and they most likely never will.

The Hot ACs in Milwaukee have been all over it since November.
______________

If Norah Jones could make it to CHR with "Don't Know Why", then Michael Buble can make it with his much more uptempo tune, especially with the "Dancing With the Stars" tie-in. Also be sure to sample the "Starcity Remix" version, which some AC stations are playing and sounds a lot more contemporary than the album version.

And some ACs are much more hit-oriented than you might suspect: for example, last week, AC station WMGS in Wilkes-Barre, PA had Click Five's "Just The Girl" at the top of their Mediabase spins chart! It must be a uniquely adult-oriented market, though, since both of the local CHR/Pop stations are giving "You're Beautiful" tons of airplay, as is WAEB-FM in nearby Allentown. This is expected, though, since there are no Hot AC stations in these markets, so both the AC and CHR/Pop stations tweak their playlists to fill in the gap.

Someone must be touching it, #24 CHR/Pop with +438 spins. You're Beautiful will make Top 20 though probably will fizzle out there, though I've been wrong before. I'm more happy about Cascada breaking the Top 20.

As of Friday 2/10, it's now #21 with +414 spins... and Cascada's song is now #18, so your wish has come true.

I also couldn't help but notice that Bon Jovi's "Who Says You Can't Go Home" (a rare "Country" song from him), Carrie Underwood's "Jesus, Take the Wheel", and Rascal Flatts' "What Hurts the Most" are all starting to get some CHR airplay... in recent years some pop hits have crossed over to country (Sheryl Crow, Kid Rock, etc.), but along with the success of Tim McGraw and Keith Urban, could these indicate a new trend of country hits crossing over to CHR/Pop? And frankly I think it's about time that Rascal Flatts crossed over... ever since I heard "I'm Movin' On", I knew they would appeal to a mainstream audience, just like Lonestar and Diamond Rio.

Speaking of which, Kenny has three things necessary to make it in the pop music world: a good body, a failed celebrity marriage, and gay rumors.

And his music ain't bad, either.
