To sflaboy: Rick Peters!!

Hey Rick:

THANKS FOR DROPPING BY!!! Thanks for the post!! I am doing a complete history of south florida radio and I have a few things missing. You said ask away so here are a few questions for you and your knowlege:

1. Do you know when WBUS became freeform rock and became jazz?

2. When did LOVE 94 go from mellow album rock(soft rock) to the soft AC format? Would you know when the exact date was when LOVE 94 went on air?

3. Would you happen to know when 97 AIA began it's AC format?

4. Would you happen to remember what exact date Majic went to oldies full time?

5. Would you happen to know any history of 96.3 before it became WMYQ Top 40? I am trying to find out when it became WJHR from WGBS Beautiful Music.

6. Would you happen to know when WEDR became progressive rock? I know it went urban in 1970.

7. Would you happen to know when WCKO 102.7 dropped its simulcasting of WRBD 1470 and became an R&B station called "Soul CKO 102.7"?

Thanks for taking the time to read this note. I hope you can help. There is no real complete history of South Florida radio anywhere on the internet so I am trying to get as much info as I can to get one together.

THANKS AGAIN RICK!!!

T.J.

TJ,

The Majic Bus was in the format as a totally freeform AOR when I got here in Sept of 70 to go to UM. Don't know when it went on the air.
WSHE went on either in 71 or early 72. Worked part time for them starting in 73 out of the building (and trailer) on Davie Road Extention - full time by 74 .
If you can find Al Anderson, (believe he ended up with stations in New England), he was the PD of A1A during the 70's. He could give you the history of A1A.
When I got to WWWL it had been on the air for a while in a more "chicken rock" vein. Really no distinction between soft rock and soft AC back then. Love 94 was distinctive in that we played soft tracks both hits and lp tracks off hit lps. CBS was doing the same type of format in Boston and LA. Problem was, the music was moving in a different direction and it couldn't last. Of course, this is where Greg Budell debuted in the market as a morning man. Line up was Greg, Irene Richards, me, Jeff Fisher, with Skip Herman and Keith Allen doing news (2 news people!!!).
The exact date of Majic going Oldies is debatable. They were playing with it after the aborted attempt at White CHR (after K102) in 85. I met with them in 86 and put the KLUV, Dallas Oldies (TK) approach on the air then. Consider it a process, but by the Winter of 87 it was full blown 50's, 60's. Mindy, Eric B, and Ron St. John were all in place when I arrived....20 years later Mindy and Ron are still there. Mindy might have some info on the pre-oldies WMXJ.
No info about MYQ or EDR.
Hope some of this helps...the whole decade is somewhat of a blur...but that's another story for another board.

From being a general 'radio geek', I have tapes I made of Majic when I was a kid..You know, mixtapes and such...I've said this before on the board, but it begs repeating....Some of the songs on there are "Dancin' In The Sheets" by Shalamar, "We Are The World", and "Everytime You Go Away" by Paul Young.....Rougly Spring '85.....An ID creeped in of an unidentified female voice (live jock ID, not a VO) that says "WMXJ Pompano Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami!! South Florida's Non Stop Hits FM!! Majic 102!!" (no 'point seven').

When I did P/T at LITE FM in 05/06 (of course Majic was across the hall by then), I played the aircheck to some people there, and nobody could identify the person on the tape.

Hey guys:

First Rick:

Thanks for the info. One question, would you happen to know when WBUS went from feerform AOR to the jazz format? I will see if I can find Al Anderson for that A1A info!!

And Radiosanchez:

I would have loved to hear that tape. Now that I remember there was a question I wanted to ask you:
What would you have called Magic 102: Adult top 40, AC/Oldies or Hot AC?

Thanks again guys!!

I believe the Billboard article that reported the flip from K-102 actually indeed called it "Adult Top 40". I know there was a 'transitional' period before Oldies that they did brand themselves as "Classic Hits", and played everything from 60s-80s, in fact, there was a billboard during this period that featured if I remember correctly a picture of Springsteen (and they were already playing Oldies by then).

Rick,
How the hell are you? where the hell are you? Are you living in S. Fla?
I'm currently in Massachusetts, but just found a buyer for my house and plan on moving back to S. Fla by the end of March.
Shoot me an email and let's get caught up. [email protected]
