TO WTIC

Tonight, WHOO (also on 1080) is carrying the Florida State/Clemson football game. How would I know this, listening from Pennsylvania? Because this station is somehow managing to knock out my Red Sox game by overpowering 50 kw WTIC on 1080. Quite a trick with a mere 190 watts of nighttime power (their legal limit). In fact, it is quite a trick with their 10000 watt critical hour allotment. Their normal night time signal would barely make it from Kissimmee to Orlando, let alone 850 miles to PA! Clearly, they are leaving the daytime power on in order to cash in on the football coverage. That's an FCC violation, unless they somehow got a waiver (doubtful).

This is the second time in 4 nights that I'm picking up WHOO down here; the first time was Friday night when they were also carrying a football game. That one was a high school game between Apopka and Lake something-or-other. As for the rest of the summer, I have never heard a peep out of this station. WTIC normally booms in here like a local. And, I often listen to the Sox on 1080 at night - so I'd know.

I truly hope that someone at WTIC reports this to the FCC. The interference is strong enough here that it probably causes issues within the SW corner of WTIC's protected contour.

Things are bad enough with IBOC coming on line, we don't need stations cheating on night time power in order to make more $$$.

in a phone conversation, the enginer for this kissimmee fla 1080 station indicated a remote control failure and that control of the facilty is unfortunately being done locally; by driving to the transmitter site. they expect their remote control to be back operational in a couple days.

thank you for your post.

we have had discussions with 2 other co channel class IIIs so far this year on this same issue. this particular time i didnt catch it myself so your post is greatly appreciated. as you know WTIC values its service areas both day and night. if you encounter this again or other signal related issues please post again or contact us at [email protected]

Thanks so much for this! It was the sort of issue that I knew you'd be interested in. And, they were messing with my Sox games!!

The engineer for WHOO was kind enough to post on the Orlando board; he also indicated that the remote control issue has been addressed. And, you guys were sounding great down here over the weekend. Now, let's hope that the upcoming IBOC chop (KYW or WBAL?) doesn't wipe you away!!

Now if something can be done about WTIC-AM 1080 and that terrible audio during the day?
Not possible seeing as they also became a victim of the IBOC crap :(

I also heard WHOO one night here in Albany NY,i think WTIC was off the air (Either that or they werent coming in good 1 or the other)

I thought it was strange hearing WHOO!!

WTIC-AM's signal is so bad because of IBOC, that I must listen to WTIC-AM on WTIC-FM on the HD2 channel.

On the FM channel the sound is good and best part is NO LOCAL ADS as the HD2 stream is the same stream they use for WTIC Online.

I wonder what local advertisers would think if they knew that WTIC-AM's HD signal was causing so much noise that it was forcing people to listen to the HD2 stream which has no local ads.

If I were WTIC, I would kill IBOC on the AM and keep it on the FM. There is no benefit for WTIC AM to be running HD whatsoever, its actually driving listeners away.

Yes, I am now getting hiss splattering over WTIC from KYW's hash-maker, 20 kHz away. If I position the radio just right, I can null most of it out, but it is definitely degrading the signal. It causes a high-pitched hiss. This business of the IBOC interference being limited to 10 kHz +/- is hogwash. Don't believe that hype. It definitely causes problems over a 40 kHz range around the originating station.

So far, no hiss from WBAL - but I can just imagine what they will do to WTIC when they flip on the Soviet era-style jammer.

The IBOC interference seems to be worse at the lower end of the AM band, perhaps this is because receivers have more of a wide band bias at that end. Just a guess....
