TODAY IS THE DAY!

Today is the day when Canadian TV stations shut off their analog signal and go digital! But not everyone will be ready. So what's gonna happen come later tonight?

I don't think Canada will go "nightlight" on some stations like in the US.

Goodbye Canada analog TV, especially CBUT/CHEK/CHAN...

i hope digital tv works better for you all in canada then it did in the united states.

Yes. there are a couple of people on this board that can't seem to make it work. Guess Canada is doomed. ::)

Most of the analog signals that are in "mandatory" markets have already converted over the last week or two. (Remember, not all Canadian analog TV is required to convert.)

At least half the Toronto analog dial has gone away over the last few days. Life appears to be going on.

I think it will. I've heard up there it comes in Imperial Gallons, or with extra Zed or something....

You'll note they did not attempt the conversion during hockey season. ;D

CTV Ottawa went off the air at midnight Tuesday morning. The remaining ones in Ottawa went off right at midnight. However. CTV in ottawa can still be received in analogue over the air on Channel 8, as it's a repeater station. Glad the cable finally got fixed a week ago.

And now the cable report for Massena/Potsdam, NY. CBOT 4 is showing just a black screen today while CJOH is still on and is definitely still analog based on the ghosting. They must be relaying the Cornwall signal on channel 8 as it would cover the headend much better. But CBOT has had it's digital signal on air for some time now, you would have though Time Warner would be prepared unless they plan on dropping CBOT altogether which would upset some hockey fans.

Best case scenario -- Time Warner is working to restore CBOT using digital equipment, taking more time than usual. Second-best scenario -- Time Warner opts for CBMT from Montreal instead (or any other CBC signal available via satellite), as this is how many cable systems in Michigan and Maine get their CBC (including Time Warner's own systems). Worst-Case, of course, is dumping CBC altogether.

They could always fiber in Kingston's CKWS from Watertown's headend, they must have some line running up here since they bring CBS, FOX and ABC from Watertown. Or they could bring in CKWS's Prescott translator in analog. I'm pretty sure there isn't a line from Potsdam/Massena to Ottawa because they were having issues getting our PBS signal OTA and ended up routing the fiber through Buffalo I think.

We have some CBC back on now, its hard to get local identification until the evening news so I'll check back then. It looks clearer than an analog signal so it could be either CBOT in digital or some satellite CBC.

Its definitely CBOT's digital signal. The weird part is Time Warner is putting the full 16:9 video onto a 4:3 cable channel. They should be letterboxing the signal, but then when CBC pillar boxes a 4:3 program you'd end up with black on all sides. I wonder if they are providing the full HD channel on digital cable now. At least now you could stretch the picture on a 16:9 TV and get the correct aspect ratio but it would still be 480i.

No change here in Eastern Maine. Time Warner Cable still relaying CBMT Montreal. No visible change at all during the CBC News Montreal at 5 and 6PM newscasts.

Looks like they are working on things or else something went wrong because CBOT is showing a screen that says no signal and CJOH is a black screen. Perhaps an antenna fix to get a more reliable CBOT signal, we'll see. I really hope they don't get rid of these channels because of digital signal issues. I know some of you Canadians who have lost US channels on cable due to poor signals or the DTV switch. I guess I'll have to wait and see.

DTV for me, so far, has meant getting fewer OTA signals than before. Mind you, the ones I am getting now are of a far superior quality than their analog predecessors

In London, I am able to get:

10-1 CFPL-DT (CTV 2)
14-1 CITS-DT-2 (CTS)
18-1 CICO-DT-18 (TVO)
19-1 CKXT-DT-2 (Sun News)
20-1 CJMT-DT-1 (OMNI.2)
23 CBLN-TV (CBC)
53 CBLFT-9 (SRC)

CBLN has moved from Channel 40 to Channel 23, and the signal is inferior to what was there before. CBLFT has drastically reduced power, and even though I live less than 2km from the tower, the signal is almost unwatchable.

I am not able to get OMNI.1 for some reason, and I am unable to get Global, CHCH, CKCO, or Citytv.

Seems the Canadian experience is duplicating the American experience quite "nicely".

Surprisingly, I don't see any nightlighting Canadian analog stations, compared to the US past 6/12. I guess CRTC didn't want that.

Part of that may be because many Canadian stations stayed on the same channel. For example, Toronto's CFTO was broadcasting on both analog Channel 9 and digital Channel 40, but now broadcasts exclusively on digital Channel 9.

As for other stations, the CRTC probably just didn't see the need.
