TODAY SHOW LOCAL NEWS TEASES

I watch the local morning news here in Atlanta (WXIA) and they do a live tease with Meredith/Matt for the upcoming Today show each morning. It's not just a here's what's coming up, but the local anchors have plenty of interaction time with Meredith/Matt asking about life, etc.

Which markets do a tease with them? Do you think it's the top 10 markets? Or even the top 20?

They do the same thing with the hosts of NBC-10's morning news program in Philly - at about 6:50 am every morning. I thought that it was a perk for NBC O&O affiliates (seen it in NY and LA), but WXIA is owned by Gannett. Nor is Atlanta a top 10 market (at least not yet).

So, I am not sure what the criteria is for this deal. I'll say one thing, it sure must keep Meredith and Matt busy before 7!!

Atlanta is Neilson DMA #9. That makes it a top 10 market.

As I posted somewhere earlier, the Gannett has good relations with NBC, especially with WXIA. (I hope the addition of My Network TV affiliate WATL doesn't change that). About a year or so ago for a few months, Jay Leno did a taped a personalized tease for his show naming the anchors that aired before the first break of the 11PM news. Today, just the national tease airs.

They also do one on WHDH-7 Boston. DMA #7

ABC and GMA do this as well in Boston and interact with the anchors. Its kinda different to see them laughing and conversing.. I guess thats the way to say "Hey Come watch GMA/Today!"

It changes every year, though I think this year you can only get it off Nielsen's website in an Excel file, rather than HTML like in the past. An HTML version can still be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_television_stations_in_North_America_by_media_market

I would be surprised to find if Seattle (#14) had this, but none of our Big 4 stations are O&Os. (Our CW is an O&O but doesn't have news, although it seems to have been expanding its local programming since the CW transition.)

KING in Seattle doesn't have the live teases with the Today Show (they would have to be taped at 3:45am Pacific Time). However, they actually air a second 2 hours of local news on sister station KONG. So, they are in the unusual position of hyping their local show on KONG, just before the Today Show starts.

Nonetheless, the Today Show does very well in Seattle.

Good point, but that means NO West Coast station would be able to do that, including in the #2 market, NBC O&O KNBC-4 Los Angeles.

KNSD NBC San Diego 7/39 (did I get all the tags in for this one?) does a tease between 6:00 and 6:30am with one or both of the Today show anchors who promo the upcoming show and interact with the San Diego crew (usually Bill Menish and Marianne Kushi).

Aha! So now we know what Matt 'n' Meredith do after 9am ET,
instead of hosting the third hour.

What do they tease for Sandy Eggo? "Coming up at 7 on the
three-hour old Today Show..."

Although I suppose on "breaking news" mornings when they have to
do a live first or second hour at 9 for CT/MT, KNSD gets blown off.

I've always had an issue with cross-promotion between local anchors and network co-hosts. Simply because the hype that's exchanged often doesn't match the content of the stories (or features) that are coming up at 7AM [argytunes lives on east coast]!

While the concept is certainly an incentive to "test drive a morning news show" and give not-so-wide awake viewers a 'warm fuzzy feeling' between the local and network anchors, I wish the network people would work a little harder on their stories as opposed to the 'teases?' :-[

With all the choices that are out there...most "morning viewers" aren't going to bother watching a show with stories that don't match the hype!

argytunes....who dropped "Entertainment Tonight" years ago after realizing that more than 50% of the show contained more 'teasing about the stories' than the actual stories themselves!!

Being in Phoenix, we get the west coast feed of Today half the year. During breaking news mornings, we get Matt and Meredith saying, "Good Morning, it's 7am on West Coast...!" They usually update part of the first half hour and Al's updated forecast focuses on the West Coast. Occasionally, they will re-do the entire half hour.

In the winter, we are in the Mountain Time Zone and usually they don't bother updating the newscast. Our local station has to update us during their cut-ins. Occasionally, they try to update it. However, it comes across as, "NBC News has just learned that Donald Rumsfeld is leaving....relevant info for about 90 seconds" and then "Coming up next, our interview with Brittany Spears..." It's extremely clumsy in the Mountain Time Zone (I guess Salt Lake City, Denver, Boise, Albuquerque, El Paso, and Phoenix/Tucson (half the year) don't rate highly in the grand scheme of things.

I'm not sure about the local morning news interaction with the Today show hosts at my local affiliate, but a couple months ago, I noticed WTHR in Indianapolis having interactions with Jay Leno on what was coming up on the Tonight Show. In this case, Jay would call the anchors by name and talk about what was coming up on his show after the newscast. Jay's segment on WTHR appears to be canned, however. NBC seems to have an interesting concept going with these shows, but I agree with a couple of other posters in questioning whether they are really necessary.

When I went to "watch" (i.e., stand outside in the freezing cold) the Today show a few years ago, they did the local interaction with East Coast (and some Central) affiliates before the Today show started. (They left the live audio up going outside, although, you could only hear Matt and Katie's side). I know they did Dallas and Chicago right before 7am Eastern time (don't know if it was live or taped for later in the Dallas/Chicago airing - since I was in NY at the time!) - I heard the 2 DFW Anchor's names, and they referenced Dallas and Chicago people during the tease (I think they were running a contest at that time, and both Chicago and Dallas had contestants...). They also did the Mountain & West Coast promos during the 7:25/7:55/8:25 breaks. IIRC, Denver, Phoenix, LA, and San Diego were done at some point.

Granted this was several years ago, so my memory may be a little hazy...

I wonder how they do that? If the West Coast's 6am hour is the East Coast's 9am hour, how do the NBC stations in SD, LA and SF chat with Meridith and Matt, who are still on the air? Unless they either do it during a break in the network.

Of course, Matt and Merideth are often not on the third hour of Today. But I doubt they'd stick around to chat with the local anchors on the West Coast if they're already off the Today Show, which is continuing in their absence with Ann Curry, Al Roker or other secondary hosts.

Why not. Do you think that Matt or Meridith are out the door and on the way home at 9:01am Eastern? Though they may not be on the air, I'm sure they have post production (or even some pre-production work for future shows) that they do including teases with the affiliates.

I also see the same thing on KGTV ABC in San Diego. During the 6-7am hour they have a short recorded tease from a GMA anchor and they also usually do a live 1 to 1+30 tease with some chit-chat between the San Diego anchors and the GMA host.

I wonder how they do that?

As I mentioned, they do it during breaks in the program - the 7:25-7:30 break (which seems longer and longer as time goes by - filled mostly with commercials here) gives them time to do 2-3 live shots with stations further west - they had everything lined up and went Chicago right into Dallas (2-3 break) then from there.

Also, if there is a long recorded piece (4-5 minutes) by one of the correspondants, there's a window there also.

Finally, if Meredith is talking interviewing someone, there's probably nothing stopping Matt from doing a solo tease.

Are there any stations left that DON'T do local news in the five-minute break?

If you don't count the 30 seconds of weather or 30 seconds of traffic (split by more commercials), add KPRC to that list...

WWJ in Detroit (newsless) ran commercials and promos during the whole 5+ minute break back in the 2001-2002 timeframe. You would think with WWJ-AM, they could put something together...

Ironically, WGTU/WGTQ in the Traverse City/Sault Ste. Marie market (who are also effectively newsless) do manage to put together a 5 minute newsbreak during the breaks of GMA...
