'Today Show'Increases Audience

Thank a runaway bride and Tom Cruise for helping boost NBC’s ‘Today Show’ back to number one in the Nielsen ratings.

‘ Today’ came very close to losing the top spot in early morning television to ABC’s ‘Good Morning America’, however Katie Curic’s interview with the runaway bride, and Matt Lauer’s verbal confrontation with Tom Cruise helped boost Today’s ratings by a few hundred thousand viewers over GMA.

Re: "Today Show" Increases Audience

I would think that last week (July 4th-8th), the ratings not just for "Today", but for "Good Morning America" and the "CBS News Early Show" as well, were probably higher than the same week in 2004, even though the week of July 4th is usually the week when the fewest people watch TV.

The likely reason would be the London subway bombings on July 7th; many who usually don't watch TV during the early morning hours probably tuned-in to get the latest news on the attacks.
