Gotye - "Somebody That I Used to Know" will be around in 2032, as a "Classic Hit".
Actually, it already sounds like a classic today!

As for Will Smith's "Get Jiggy With It"....I think I'd rather hear "He's the Greatest Dancer" from 1979 instead!


A song today really has to be good, to stand the test of time (20-40+ years down the road) and Gotye should be one of those.....Songs from the 1950's and 60's are still being heard today on classic radio.

Although I agree with you, will it be played on the radio? All the Things She Said by T.A.T.U came on my sister's IPod as she was waking up this morning and it got me thinking. The only reason I recognized the song was because I had just downloaded an aircheck about 2 weeks ago from WHTZ in 2003, in which this song was #1 on the Interactive 9 at 9, and you don't hear it anymore. What's up with that?

It was a huge hit in 2011 and still seems to be played a lot now. You make a good point about the T.A.T.U. song. However, "All The Things She Said" had pretty much vanished from radio just a few months after it peaked. It was big in the spring of '03 then was completely gone by the end of the year.

Will we see the return of rhythmic AC to many markets? I don't quite understand why that format never works?

I've wondered the same thing. I love Rhythmic AC and wish it were still a viable format.

Wow I've gotta disagree here, and say that's one of the least likely songs to survive two decades - When was the last time you heard "Gettin' Jiggy Wit' It" on the radio? Or "I'm Too Sexy"? Or "Everybody Dance Now"?

In general, I think songs with deeper lyrical content tend to survive the test of time, probably because they can't easily be replaced by a newer, fresher version of the same song - I know there are exceptions, but I feel like this is usually true

You make some good points. You might be right. However, I consider "Party Rock Anthem" to be a feel-good fun song. Lyrical content is important, but the content doesn't have to be deep to make people feel good and enjoy what they're listening to. I still crank that up whenever I hear it. It makes me want to dance and still sounds as fresh as it did when it was first released. While "Party Rock Anthem" might not be on a 2032 station's regular playlist, it might appear on a special classic show or on the main playlist of a Classic Hits station that plays a lot of music from, say, the '90s, '00s, and '10s. You never know!

Another song that comes to mind is Usher's "DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love". That's another song I LOVE listening to. It's been 2 1/2 years since that song was released, and it still sounds fresh and enjoyable. I love it and still hear it on the radio a lot. Does anyone think that song will still be around on the radio in 2032?

That's true - but most people would rather listen to a feel-good song that's current, rather than a feel-good song from 20 years ago - songs about feeling good and partying all the time are really easy to dispose of and replace with newer songs (about feeling good and partying all the time...)

My gut says that in 20 years, you're not going to want to listen to Party Rock Anthem or DJ Got Us Falling In Love - instead, you're going to want to listen to fresh, newer party songs that are current and don't sound dated

I agree with you to a certain extent, atlantaboy, but what about a lot of the disco hits that are still parts of classic hits stations today, 30+ years later? They are certainly "feel good", somewhat shallow songs.

I don't expect all of the "feel good" songs of today to totally disappear, but many of them definitely will. Rhythmic tracks don't hold up well. Rap isn't really a significant part of CHR anymore, but I don't think those CHR crossovers from years past will be heard in 20 years, either.

a huge factor that EVERYONE has overlooked....

1. if a song like "Party rock" has a re-surge in ...
say 2017 on the movie of the year soundtrack...
or a movie that bombs at the theatre but has
that cult following once on vhs..i mean, dvr,
no no on bluRay lol...

2.one other thing to consider...
if Usher is long forgotten..
in the 20-teens...and is just
producing. in the 2020-decade...

BUT in 2030 gets a mtv /bet/ or
a Grammy lifetime achievement award
in 2030 . . .(or has an untimely but
natural passing) in 2030....
his music will surge..and a side effect of that
while the pre loaded playlists of chr's may
all pick "yeah" and a future hit....
some creative misic directors..if they are still around...lol
may re discover other hits and will find some hits
that will get air play in 2032....

3 one other thing that may spike artists from today in 2032,
it may be "cool" to listen to 2005 - 2015 music in the 2030s..
look at the 80s phenom around the 2001 and then the 90s
boom..just years after the decade ended..

You make a good point about the decade formats appearing just years after they ended. Maybe I should have pushed this forward another 10 years. I would predict that the 2000s format will appear around 2019 or so, and then this decade's music 10 years later. The problem I see with the decade formats is they appear seemingly out of nowhere, are on the air for maybe as long as 3 years, but after the first year or so they start to gradually flip formats.

Hmm... interesting! You have a good point though. Today's music is so disposable as compared to music from years past. Once a song disappears on the radio due to newer stuff coming out, it's gone for good in so many cases. The younger generations just forget about it and move on. They don't have as much of a desire to listen to older music (unless, perhaps, it's considered "classics" from the '80s or something) as much as the baby boomers do.

copy/paste the charts...and ue a word program to
sort thru it to see the diff. (number of diff. artists)
and see how many HITS and MISSES comes up...

my guess it is the same... when xm radio used to...
when it was just xm did a Bottom 40 classic...
i have never heard of the songs..
