Today's Dumb Radio Ink Headline

So I log on this morning and see this headline at RadioInk.com:

Survey says: Survey Says Stern Factor Overrated

"Despite Howard Stern’s move to satellite radio, a nationwide survey conducted by American Media Services indicates that 86% of Americans are not likely to consider the purchase of satellite radio in the future because Stern has left terrestrial radio." Story HERE

Excuse me?! You mean "only" 42 million people would consider the purchase of satellite radio because of Howard Stern!? Those poor bastards at Sirius must be in a cold sweat!

Seriously. I am on the fence about the long-range viability of satellite radio's business plan. But my money is in my pocket, not in the stock so I am a skeptic. That aside, the headline is dumb. 14% would be HUGE. If anything I am doubtful about the accuracy of the survey.
______________

Not to be picky about the grammar or you..as you bring to the table a very viable topic, but there is a huge difference between 42 million people "considering" and 42 million people "buying" the product.

"I've" considered it...not because of Howard, but because of what they have. Finanically and time wise, makes no sense for me here until I can flip (to) the Bird and find out whats happening in my town. That ain't happening soon....

Stern has been the most visable jock to go to the Bird. Jim Rome is making a feeble attempt at it; His contract is up this spring, and hes dropping hints about people paying $13 a month to hear him. You couldnt' pay ME any money to sit through his schtick, but I digress.

There are, however, millions more who have little or no idea who Howard Stern is who will consider buying on the Bird for alternative programming. Upper middle class to the upper class who have tired of terrestrial radios corporate mentality.

I don't think you're being picky; your point is valid. I don't think that 42 million people are getting ready to buy satellite radio. My point was that Radio Ink's take on it, the headline, was dumb.

> Upper middle class to the upper class who have tired of terrestrial radios

The only people I know who buy satellite radio because they are tired of "radios corporate mentality" are people who either work in radio, used to work in radio, or have some business connection to radio. My non-radio friends who like satellite like the idea of digital audio and commercial-free stations.. or Howard Stern.
______________

Considering Satellite?

Maybe you misunderstood "consider."

I would consider XM because they have Fox.
(I'm not interested in Stern.) I even look at
their brochure if I see it in a store. But I
wouldn't even consider Sirius, which boasts
AAR and Stern.

Biiiiig deal. That doesn't mean I'm going to buy
XM. No way.

Local talk interests me more than syndicated.
There's no local talk on satellite.
IMHO, satellite is pointless.

I dunno. I know that considering isn't buying, but I still
would be amazed if it's true that 14% of the population
would "consider" going to satellite because of the
unavailability of Howard Stern on terrestial radio. My point
is that if it IS true, then it's silly for Radio Ink to then
conclude that Howard Stern's importance to satellite radio
is "underrated."

If 14% would consider it SOLELY because of Howard Stern,
they may be underpaying him.

How many are considering satellite because of
the unavailability of classical on AM/FM in most markets?

How many are considering satellite because of
the unavailability of classical on jazz in many markets?

And it it's true, the industry may realize how stupid
it was to let him slip away. Instead we have even
sleazier shock jocks who aren't as entertaining, like
Lex & Terry of Drunk Bitch Friday fame and Star
and Buc Wild, who are bigoted scumbags.

DUH! You can't so literally take this as "42 million people". Surveys and statistics don't work that way.

86% of Americans SURVEYED said they wouldn't consider paying for Stern. Do you think such a survey is meant to be representative of 100% of the population in America? They likely only surveyed those who have ever listened to Howard Stern on the radio before.

Dumb

You still blew one headline totally out of proportion because you made an assumption- INCORRECTLY.

Both shows brought to you by Clear Channel, the corporate home of Rush Limbaugh.

Yes, which also dumped Stern and owns a piece of satellite.

Isn't that revolting?

LOL!!! Kind of funny when people dont see the big picture.

Over and out.

Re: Dumb

If a survey is taken and it's a representative sample of the US Population, then it DOES represent 42 million people. If it is NOT a representative sample, then what was the point?!

I could careless about the story. I didn't get Sirius because of Howard Stern. I got it because I wanted a wider listening range of music. I have yet to touch most of the other channels on Sirius, but I mainly listen to Sirius Hits on Ch 1, Starlite on 2, Sirius Love on 3, Big 80's on 8, The Pulse (90's & Now) on 9, & Chill on 35. I usually sleep to Chill. I still listen to some of the Chicago area stations, including WTMX, WILV, Nine FM on WRZA (usually, but also WKIE when in their broadcasting area), and in Milwaukee WKTI, WMYX, & WXSS. Sorry k9ez, I don't listen to any of the CC Milwaukee stations when up there, especially after turning off Light 97.3.

The story is poorly written in that it doesn't identify what population was surveyed for the poll. Anyone who has had a basic statistics class knows this. The authors of the article are misleading their readers on the accuracy of this poll.
