Today's the day... (UV)

Well today we will get the results of the second-ever book for Lebanon/Rutland/etc etc. Any predictions?

Kixx on top again?

Will Champ take another chomp at the Q and narrow the gap some more? Where will 93.9/101.7 fit in to this equation?

Will 99 Rock pull more than a 2 share and will all the college kids thump their chests again?

Will The Score even show up?

Has XL 92 finally hit bottom (could they go any lower)?

Or will WJJR edge all of the above out?

> Kixx on top again?
Probably, if not near the top. I'd expect increases on Oldies and Q.

> Will Champ take another chomp at the Q and narrow the gap

I wouldn't be surprised if Champ chomped more at 939/1017 with the similar formats. I bet 939/1017 will probably see a drop from diluting their format.

If they get excited over 12+ #'s, then they still haven't learned anything.

> Will The Score even show up?
Depends ... don't forget very little of the book comes from the Claremont area, and can a 1,000-watt AM make it onto a book based on such a large area?

> Has XL 92 finally hit bottom (could they go any lower)?
Well you don't know they're the new XL-92.3, so if you got a book they're still screwed.

> Or will WJJR edge all of the above out?
JJR and ZRT have the best signals for the market, then Q, then Kixx, then Oldies. These guys will probably always round out the top 5.

Wow.

Oldies share cut in HALF. Moving Pauline proved to be a bad move for Oldies, but a good move for The Wolf. Q106 now tied with 93.9/101.7 and nearly tied with Champ, and 99 Rock just a fraction behind?!?! How the mighty have truly fallen. If it weren't for the Wolf's major gain on Kixx, I'll bet things weren't quite celebratory at Nassau HQ.

Jeff Shapiro is at a bank-drive-up somewhere laughing.

Good to see the Point almost pulling a deuce.

Great job Nassau! You've really proved your greatness! 93.9/101.7 & Chump certainly pulled from the Q as could have been predicted. Although I still don't understand the reasoning behind 93.9/101.7 playing the Classic stuff? Makes no sense when you already have a Classic Rock station, the Chomp, in mkt. I guess it's all about divide and conquer. What the hell happened to Oldies? Don't say it was moving Pauling. She's perhaps the worst jock on the radio in the UV. Did she bring her really hard trivia question with her to the Wolf? Her whole show on Oldies centered around that one bit. It takes more than a jock switching stations to more than halve a stations numbers. Wait a second, we are talking about mkt#180. How many diaries could really have been returned? 50 at best? Don't worry small marketeers, those numbers don't really represent much anyways. Rutland combined with Lebanon? Whose idea was that? Let's combine Burlington with Barre/Montpelier, same difference. There's no logic to it. Let's all get together at the Cave and discuss tonight!

FACT CHECK Mr. Fred!

There are more than 50 diaries PER WEEK of the spring book returned for our market. Total of about 900-1,000 diaries for the entire book.

The numbers represent listening trends in the market, which is a big programming tool.

Here's the genius idea behind combining Rutland with Lebanon: it makes for a bigger market! And there are a slew of stations that reach a good majority of the survey area: JJR, Kiss, Q, Oldies, Kixx, 939/1017, Champ, EBK, etc. etc. And since it is over such a large area, it shows the power of a few stations: Cat Country, The Wolf, and FRD ... all pulling pretty impressive numbers this book for their signal size and reach.

I hate to say it, but everytime you have a chance to chew out Nassau, you do. YOU DON'T LIKE THEM, WE GET IT! But guess what, the days of letting mayhem run the ship under $hapiro/Caswell are GONE. FORGET IT! Real radio is here ... start playing with the big guys and get over it.

Facts:
Biggest gainers in 12+ market share:
1: WJAN/WJEN
2: WOKQ
3: WFRD

Biggest losers in 12+ market share:
1: WWOD/WCFR
2: WXXK
3: WYKR

A couple of personal observations/comments:
1: The Oldies drop must be a fluke. I wouldn't be surprised to see Oldies return to the top 5 stations in the fall. Just so little was changed (imaging and jingles, music slightly refocused, and two new jocks -- one who is heritage in the market) that it doesn't make sense that a HUGE drop actually had taken place. Plus, no matter how popular a jock, one person's departure doesn't cause that much of a shake-up in the ratings, unless you're Howard Stern. The only way a change in market share like this could happen is if some other station clearly came in and dominated a demo previously owned by Oldies. By the 12+ numbers, it's clear no one station is now challenging Oldies. Fluke.

2: Look at the top 10 stations and count: 5 rock stations (3 classics, 1 active, and 1 alternative), 3 country stations, 1 AC, and 1 CHR. What does this say about the market? Should WGXL try a different format? Rock seems to work, as does country!

3: For WOKQ to make such a big move up in the market, Arbitron must have sampled an area with a high population of people who work in Concord or Manchester. There's no way OKQ can pull numbers in the Leb-Rut-WRJ market without people working in Manchester.

Stick, you completely missed the point. "Some" of the stations hit both areas. Not all. These numbers simply aren't accurate! As far as Nassau goes, the drop in numbers speak for itself. I agree, the $hapiro days were really bad. Whatever happed to former Vox GM Caswell? I still hear him on spots.

Wally-why do you keep asking questions about yourself? Everybody knows you're gone because you couldn't get the job done. Rumor has it you were replaced by a woman!

When people get canned it's not like the stations ever care to fix the spots that have once-employed voices. The Q was fun to listen to at times even 2-3 years ago (once you sat through the endless barrage of spots), now it's stale. Their "A to Z" weekend embodies this, for years they played all their songs A to Z, now they just circle around the alphabet by artist. Lame. If you're not going to do it right, don't do it at all.

They're not even gourmet Vanilla anymore, they're Price Chopper Generic Vanilla, the lowfat variety that melts as soon as you take it out of the freezer.

Whatever happened to former Vox GM Caswell?

I believe he is running his own ad agency at this time.
