Tolo Out!

Reports from Seattle say that Thor Tolo did his last afternoon show on KGNW on June 25th as the station decides to head in a "different direction".

Tolo is quoted as saying he'd like to stay and continue his career in the Puget Sound area.

Is this news? It is in Seattle, but is it here?

If so, I apologize.

Please- feel free to beat a dead horse and say something negative about someone who hasn't worked in the Pittsburgh market in years.

I was trying to prevent that pettiness, but please, go on.

Is there some shortage of people currently working in the Pittsburgh market to say negative things about?

Who said anything negative about the guy?

Is there interest in him? There was just a question about his whereabouts here recently.

Wow! Thanks for the support, Boss Radio. Pratte4life might need some remedial reading help. I was just passing along some news about a former Pittsburgh personality. No malice intended!

The headline is "Tolo Out!" I thought at first someone found an old thread when he was let go in Pittsurgh a few years ago and added something to it. As much as I appreciate the update, I sort of side with Pratte on this one.

Talk about conspiracy theories...

Didja ever notice that when people agree with a smarmy, misleading and very biased headline, they find that it's not smarmy, misleading or very biased? But if they disagree with a headline, then all the smarminess, misleadingness, and blatant bias suddenly becomes glaringly obvious?

Guys, traditionally when a topic like this comes up, the posts that follow are criticisms of the talent's past performance in this market.

Which really have nothing to do with the man's performance in Seattle.

I don't know Tolo from Toto the Dog. I was just trying to do the ounce of prevention bit.

Never did I think that would lead to my words being misconstrued into a criticism of Biz's post.

Consider yourself fortunate if you didn't know anything about Thor Tolo. In my opinion, he was one of the worst sportscasters I have ever heard in Pittsburgh. I would rank him along such gems as Kent Derdivanis, John Sanders, Milo Hamilton, Jory Rand and John Fedko in terms of futility. Am I forgetting anyone?

One name I'd have left out of that mix would be Hamilton.

His main sin was he wasn't Bob Prince.

He's been in baseball broadcasting for 55 years and is in the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. He has the reputation of being the most prepared announcer to ever call a baseball game.

And I actually liked the home run call- "Bombs Away in Pittsburgh, PA!"

To offer defenses of the others- yes, John Fedko can be annoying, but I think his role when he was to be hired was to be something of a character to compete with Myron Cope. He did that.

Sanders didn't stick out, but he did know enough to let the game be the thing.

I don't know enough about Rand to really make a comment, but why don't you like him?

Jory Rand, in my opinion is a minor league sportscaster in a major league town. He has that "deer in the headlights" look about him. Watch him deliver the sports and count the errors and stumbles. Whether you liked or hated John Steigerwald, ( I liked him ), he knew the market and the teams. Yes he could be critical of the Pirates but they deserve it. He was ahead of the curve on that one. Now, everyone bashes them and deservedly so. I think Channel 2 made a big mistake by replacing a crusty veteran like Steigerwald with an unproven rookie like Rand.

I do know Thor and like him personally and professionally, and I didn't see any dig in the original post.

I should be more clear and say I got to know him here. I've only spoken to him a few times since his move to the left coast.

It wasn't a question of Steigerwald being "critical" of the Pirates, it was his irrational hatred for baseball and his misguided belief that the Pirates can never field a competitive team because of baseball economics. He was just as illogical in his defense of Kordell Stewart, which went on for years after Stewart left the Steelers and was replaced by someone better.

Steigerwald essentially put himself out of the TV business. When it's a burden for you to come in and host a sports show, viewers notice.
