Tom Cochrun retires

While many may remember Tom Cochrun for his Emmy winning productions for television, his years on PM Magazine with Kim Hood, newscasts on channel 13 and finally news director of channel 8, others will remember his early years in radio broadcasting.
I remember him as a jock on 990 WERK Muncie working for the Poorman family. I next remember ending allnighters at Ball State listening to his WIBC/WNAP simulcast newscast "Tomorrow is Here," and then handling morning news duties with Bob Richards and other 'NAP morning men. His coverage of the Tony Kiritsis story was top notch.
I for one wish Tom an excellent retirement.

WOW! Tom is retiring? We ALL must be getting old.
Congrats on an outstanding career and best wishes Tom.

Why?

8 is better in news than it has ever been. He's still not as old as Lee Giles.

Tom was doing news on WNAP when I was a jock.

"We thought you might like to know..."

CE, when did you work at 2835 North Illinois?

Tom Cochrun did help WISH out a lot: he shuffled the way WISH does their newscasts.

Remember when the 5pm news was split like this?
5p - 5:30p Debby Knox and Mike Ahern
5:30p - 6p Kohr Harlan and Joy Dumandan
6p - 6:30p Debby Knox and Mike Ahern
(Now they use Debby Knox, Eric Halverson, Karen Hensel, Deanna Dewberry, and Dave Barras through the hour)

No more awkward transitions between sports and weather either:
Angela Buchman "50 on tuesday"
Anthony Calhoun "The Pacers play Toronto tonight at Conseco. Sports is next"

Plus, Studio A has been expanded and used for broader potential. They had three backdrops (anchor desk, weather office and interview seating). Now they have many more (traffic, plasma to left of anchor desk, sportslocker, plus improved use of the newsroom).

Nights after Boomer Dinkins. In between WENS and WIKS.

I agree Brian! "Chuck Larson on a 700 WLW Hot Wax Weekend!" It must have been around '84 because I remember skipping school and calling the WLW midday show (co-hosted by THEE Randy Michaels) and telling Randy he needed to have Chuck work more often. Randy told me I was a kid after his own heart and invited me to take a tour of WLW. I should've taken him up on it...but I didn't have a drivers license yet!

I still see Tom Cochrun produced shows on the History Channel every now and then. I've never met him, but I hear he's a class act!

Remind me Chief. When were you at WLW? That was your best on-air work.

That was so much fun. 1981-1983. Despite what anyone says Randy Michaels is a genius and I would follow him to Hell and back. He isn't done yet.

That was so much fun because we could do anything. I was graded on how many States we received complaint letters from. Used the contests to ask questions not normally heard on MOR or oldies stations. Connie Frances hotel generated many complaints. Mama Cass and Karen Carpenter questions were good. Ham Sandwich is your answer. The liner card asking about a national holiday for a specific race and being answered with 'we already have black friday" got Lindner to cancel their lease at 3 E 4th st.

I have asked for forgiveness for all the ill advised on air stunts I have done. I work now to do something totally different until we upgrade WLHN to 50,000 watts.

By the way. Let's get back to Tom. If anyone can answer the question based on chronological events in the life of a specific female news anchor who I believe started at WIFE when I was 10, let me know.

Tom was at WNAP when (BLANK- Your answer here) had only had one female lift operation. We know the years just answer based on plastic surgery.

I remember listening to Randy Michaels when he has the mid day show with Alan Gardner on the orginal "Big One". I was 200 miles away to east, but they were the best thing on radio.

I also remember when Randy "helped" out Bozo at night. This was when Bozo still played music and had WMAQ as a competitor. It was THE best radio..calling out MAQ, and just having fun with the callers.

AAHH, the good ole days

I loved the first week Michaels was on WLW. It was such a stick in the mud station and he told the Cincy newspaper that he was going to make "the grand old lady of Cincinnati radio get up and dance". One of his first topics that week was "If you could kill someone and get away with it, who would it be and why". Old foggies were s#!ting their pants! I think I did too!

Didn't Tom Cochrun go to Ball State and work at WERK for a while? Maybe even with Letterman?

Tom was seriously injured in an auto accident in 1967. He had worked at WERK week ends at the time whilke attending Ball State. I filled in on the air at WERK in late 67/early 68 while Tom was recouperating. I wa also a Ball State RTV student at the time.

Lee Giles left some big shoes to fill. Glad to hear Tom did so well at WISH.

I believe Mr. Cochrun was also a Warren Central grad...at least I remember reading that somewhere.
