Funny thing about that, Col. Tom and I filled in for H&H one Christmas morning in the early 90s, when KILT was still on Lovett Blvd. Now the history of Tom Fontaine on KILT. Tom was doing stringer stuff for the sports department when he told me he wanted to be a DJ. Since he was in radio, that meant he was already nuts. Therefore, far be it for me to talk him out of it.
My airshift was 2AM-5AM on 100.3 and 2AM-4AM on 610. The Bob Stevenson Outdoor Show was on every morning at 4AM on KILT-610. Then we would return to the simulcast with H&H at 5AM, which I produced. I told Tom, "Tell ya what. At 3AM, we will split the KILTs. I will continue on 100.3 and you take 610 till 4AM and produce the Stevenson Show. He said, "Aren't you afraid we are going to get caught?" I told Tom that management would never know it. They never knew it! Program director Rick Candea was asleep and I took a chance that he would not catch us. You couldn't get away with that today. However, I knew Tom had what it took, to get into the business and be an air personality.
I airchecked and critiqued him every day. Eventually, Tom secured a part time shift which one day would lead him into a fulltime position.
