Tom Hughes

Just noticed a recent Atlanta Spirit press release and saw that there is a Tom Hughes listed as "Senior Vice President of Communications". Does anyone know if this is GST's "King", or is it another Tom Hughes? Thought maybe he followed in the footsteps of WSB's Bobby Harper -- I believe he went to be Communications person for MARTA and another company or two before his death.

If it is the "King", I'm glad he found employment but sad that his talent isn't being shared with his loyal fans.

That Tom Hughes has been with the Thrashers since the start of the team or close to it, if I'm not mistaken. Definitely two different people.

I believe "The King" will be on The Georgia Gang this coming Sunday morning, Fox Five, 9:30 AM. It will be good to hear him again and see him interact with this interesting collection of folk.

MartyandElaine, got your rotten eggs ready?

I thought he did a great job as a newbie! He seemed more relaxed than many other substitutes, didn't try to BS, deferred to the punditry expertise of the other panelists, too. It was great to see him in action, hope he gets the call back - Atlanta misses him.

It was great to see The KING. He did a good job and was in his usual form. Hopefully, we'll see more of The KING on The Georgia Gang in the future. :)

He also had the line of the morning. When talking about the Braves Dick Williams talked about the old days of Spahn and Sain and pray for rain. Hughes had the line that now its Smoltz and Huddy and hope its muddy...

Hey, the Georgia Gang is the only intelligent discussion of local politics on the air in Atlanta, and the King breathed new life into the show. Long live the King. And, Mr. Williams if you're reading this, you gotta bring back the hedgehog sometime. I'll even pick up his lunch tab.

Tom Hughes is one of the best, if not the best morning hosts in Atlanta radio history. Plus, a class act if you've had the pleasure of knowing or working with him. It's a crying shame that some station in this market doesn't find a place for him. He's forgotten more about radio than Wachs, Baron, and all the other "talents" that a few on this board are consumed with will ever learn.

That's comparing apples to oranges. Tom Hughes is one of the great newscasters in Atlanta radio history, no doubt. He's very talented. But let's be clear...he's a Newscaster first and formost who has personality. Wachs, Von Hessler, Baron, etc are genuine air personalities. They share their lives, their unadulterated opinions, their shortcomings, their insecurities, their family life, etc. That's what a true air personality is. Does that really describe Hughes?

Just a thought: Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Great minds talk about ideas, average minds talk about events, and small minds talk about people.” Tom's job was to broadcast the news. But it was his wise, humorous, sardonic insights about the news, delivered with understatement, that made me set my alarm for 4:58 am. Given a forum that allows greater self-expression, I think we'd find that Tom could more than fill the bill and provide a palate that far exceeds anything presently offered in Atlanta. Long live "The King".

Anyone who can call Wach's Baron and the other what's his name geinuine air personalities, shows us all exactly how far down the shoot this business has fallen in such a short time....

Tom Hughes, Bob Coxe, Dennis O'Hayer...All the true GST group were PROFESSIONALS.

As for personalities, Hughes and Holeman were better than the regular guys before the regular guys, and did it without using cheap toilet humor.

How far radio, and those that think they know it now, have fallen! Very sad.

God Bless Radio......Rest in Peace

Why do you want to be punished with the rantings of Tom Houk?
Whatever happened to the hedgehog anyway?

Houk did not last long on The Georgia Gang if I remember correctly . . . Boy, could the Hedge-hog rant! I see Tom Hughes was back for a second week on TGG. If he does not become a regular, he would make a great floating fill-in.

The Hedgehog was part of the "Gang" for years! If my memory serves(and these days it doesn't very often)the "Gang" goes back to the days when Dick Williams and the "Hedgehog" did afternoons at WGST.
I'm surprised Tom didn't show up on AirAmerica.....he was certainly one of the more entertaining liberals.
Does ANYONE know where the Hedgehog aka Tom Houk crawled off to?

Thanks for the link, Mike! Houck sure does look "corporate" these days.....
Who is Ray Miller? Is that a name we should remember from past political glory?
