Tom Joyner Morning Show

The Tom Joyner Morning Show started today on WNOW 105.3. I wonder how Jamz feels about it since they run the TJMS show on Jams in Greenville and Spartanburg Wouldn't that be 2 stations that cover the market with the same show? I wonder why Cox would put up with this?

WNOW doesn't cover the market very well. It's not a big problem. 2 separate markets. No different than Channel 96.1 and B-93.7 airing Ryan Seacrest.

105.3 comes in good in Spartanburg, but becomes spotty in Greenville while driving around in the car. But I get it clear in the house with rabbit ears.

I miss the old 105.3 site north of Forest City NC. It put the 60 db contour from Greenville to Charlotte...
The 600ft tower is still up there on Cherry Mountain near Bostic, and their 12-Bay antenna system, not being used for anything at all.
I hope someone moves their signal there eventually.

Here in Gaffney, 105.3 is city grade but just barely, go about 10 miles west and you'll hit the 60 db contour just past Cowpens,
and 105.3's HD starts to drop in parts of Spartanburg.

I love the "WNOW-FM Gaffney/Charlotte" ID, as there are numerous people here in Gaffney that never goto Charlotte.
But I know lots of people listen to 105.3 here. Jamz doesn't really have a great signal up here.

The old 105.3 signal served both Greenville-Spartanburg and Charlotte, but not the total parts of both markets. And these stations choose to target one main market rather than to partially serve both. The 105.3 signal now reaches Concord, Salisbury, and Statesville areas of the Charlotte market. So even though WNOW may still be asigned to Gaffney, they have chosen to become a Charlotte market station. But, with that being said, I can still receive it with rabbit ears at my house in Greenville.

Tyler, That is true but does anyone know how it pertains to Arbitron WNOW licensed to Gaffney, Cherokee county is part of GSO diary. Also the exclusivity agreement for satellite programming TJMS usually protects the station that is airing the shows 1 mv contour. Does the WNOW signal overlap the Jamz 1mv contour? WNOW could have changed the COL to Bessemer City which definitly would have made them a Charlotte Station but with them still being Gaffney, things to me are still a little sketchy

Interestingly, most of the Charlotte radio and TV stations get a good signal into Gaffney, even though it is part of the GSP market. But the Charlotte news stations seldom cover Gaffney, unless their is a major murder or something, like that guy they captured in Gastonia a year or so ago who had killed those people down there.

I remember that incident here a few years ago in June 2009...

Here in Gaffney our local cable gives us only 2 Charlotte Channels, WBTV & WSOC...we used to get WJZY
but Charter Cable took that away 2 years ago due to what they called "Duplicate Programming" with WYCW...
Not true in my opinion, as both channels have different things at different times.

Gaffney is literally halfway, dead center between Greenville & Charlotte, which is very convenient.
With Charlotte being the much bigger city you'd think the focus would be on Charlotte and not the Upstate.

Lots of people from Gaffney deal with Shelby & Gastonia NC businesses & people much more than Greenville,
but I guess the proximity to Spartanburg changes all that, and so we're considered part of the smaller Upstate market.

105.3 will never go back to where it was, ever. There is too much money to be made in Charlotte as opposed to trying to reach two markets without covering each one with a solid signal completely. Most stations focus on one market now, anyway (perfect example are a lot of the 100kw Greenville stations that cover Asheville, they never mention that market, and vice versa with WKSF).

WKSF doesn't really have to mention or advertise in Greenville as their 'sister stations' WSSL & WESC take care of the Upstate...
I see WESC as an alternative for both though since 100.5 has trouble in lots of NC area, and they lean towards classic country.

WSPA has 97.7 to try and compete in Asheville but yes they don't really advertise, the problem with Greenville vs Asheville markets
is that Greenville has alot more signals that reach Asheville, not really that many stations in Asheville to begin with.

101.9, 105.3 & 107.3 are owned by 3 different companies, with 105.3 trying to serve Charlotte,
but having a big following in the eastern part of the Upstate...
I've heard 101.9 mention Spartanburg a few times with some of their ads (but it's kinda rare).

When 105.3 IDs as "Gaffney/Charlotte" it makes it sound like's from the Upstate trying to cover Charlotte,
when it's really from the Charlotte market with 'some' Upstate coverage.

106.9 WMIT is trying to cover 4 or 5 markets but they're non commercial anyway....It'd be interesting if they ever went commercial ;)

It is interesting that Gaffney and Shelby are both about midway between Greenville and Charlotte. But the Charlotte news stations choose to cover Shelby, whereas the Greenville stations cover Gaffney. Not much overlap at all, based strictly upon the designated market.

Thats right, people up here in Gaffney are much to Gastonia & Charlotte than Anderson or Oconee County.
We're 95 miles from Walhalla, 75 from Anderson, but 30 miles from Gastonia (which has more city population than Greenville),
so I'd rather be part of the Charlotte market of course. Being 20 miles from Spartanburg and in the 864 ties us to the Upstate.

98.1 & 96.7 don't make it up here, 107.3 has kind of a weak signal, and most of the Charlotte stations make it here great
except 106.5, 99.7 & 104.7 are a bit weak. There should be some more overlap though since it's that close.

Back on topic, 105.3 is a great addition to the dial and surely 107.3 would lose alot of listeners in Spartanburg and
Cherokee Counties, due to a weaker signal, which will definitely take away some of their numbers.
So even though it's out of market 105.3 can still have a big effect in this market, we'll wait and see.
I hope 105.3 can get some pretty good numbers in the GSP diary (if possible).
