Tom Kent on WOMG

When did Magic 98.5 drop Tom Kent? They had been airing it from 7pm-12am weeknights. Not extremely surprising, as I'm not familiar with any Cumulus stations that run the show. Never cared much for the show. Automation replaced it.

Yeah, Tom Kent is kind of a boring oldies show that a lot of stations play. Some personality, but not like comparable shows like Mike Harvey's Super Gold or others where you actually know more about the music after listening. Our oldies station in Charleston, 98.9, is ENTIRELY Tom Kent. It's his format, Fun 24/7 that maybe fifteen or twenty stations pick up.

I don't think it has any local stuff on it except for traffic and weather reports. It does have Bill Shannon (formerly at 102.5). It gets poor ratings (last time station's ratings made public was half and half between Chick and this format, and it got a .7).

Charlottesville, VA's Generations 102.3 WZGN carries him every night from 7-midnight and honestly, I'd not be unhappy if they dropped him too. He plays the same old, same old mid-70's fare and his "Department Of Useless Knowledge" segment sounds like it was made in a poorly finished basement somewhere. I called him one night and requested some Yardbirds, and he stammered then paused, then said he didn't have any to play. I've never really found his show to be something that was listenable for any length of time. I guess his show comes cheap though.

Tom's show was much better when he was playing "Oldies." The "Classic Hits" version has much less energy, is less compelling, more sterile, etc.

In fact, IMO, stations when evolving into "Classic Hits" from "Oldies" have mostly all fallen into that trap; lower energy level, more sterile, less compelling features, etc.

I guess WOMG will just continue with automation. Or maybe they could bring back "Paul Pentium." ;D

I'd have to agree completely. The transition to Classic Hits hasn't been a smooth one in pretty much any market I've listened to. They also tend to play the same very tight, very boring playlist over and over again. Not sure why that is though. Seems like it should work pretty seamlessly.

However, it typically means better performance and higher billing. I actually like classic hits way more than oldies- talk about tight playlists...

Oldies would be fine if it were actually to play the myriad of stuff out there. PD's seem to have gotten locked into the same 4 Beatles tunes, a couple Elvis hits, Dion, and maybe one or two other artists of the time who are easily recognizable and safe. Other than "Rock Around The Clock" I don't recall the last time I heard any Bill Haley on the radio.

I hate that Fun 98.9 is the only classic hits station in Charleston. Poor signal, crummy programming, just...ick. I sure do miss 95.9-IOP. It was great having Bill Shannon and Kain Cameron back on the air and on the same station for a little while. Biggest mistake Apex has ever made. Kickin' should have gone to 92.5 immediately and 95.9 been left alone. It had potential, more than Lite or Kickin' have.

I much prefer Mike Harvey, MG Kelly, or Dick Bartley.
