Tom Leykis has a new business.

New audio website to be launched by former LA Radio Talk Show Host according to RAIN. New Normal Music. The website launches at midnight on July 1, 2010 at 12 midnight with 50,000 songs in a row! None over a year old! Is there that many new songs even released in a year? Oh By The Way: Just don't call it a radio station! They say they will be taking requests too and that they will even play them! Does anyone think that Tom might carve out four hours a day for a Tom Leykis Talk Show? In house syndication? mmmm? http://newnormalmusic.com/

According to what he said on the last episode of Conway's show, he is not allowed to do any podcasts. Even if he is eventually allowed to do so, I actually hope not! He needs to be on the air, the FM dial.

Waiting for all the old, retired KRLA listeners on this board to dispute me in 3....2...1...

None of them are any good, of course. And I think that's what this is all about. Exposing new music, probably exempt from royalties because it's all new music, nothing older than a year, so he gets a waiver. Hopefully it won't be genre specific either. Could be a real trainwreck. Could be fun.

What waiver? Song writers/publishers want their ASCAP/BMI/SESAC fees in advance. SoundExchange wants performance fees in advance. Unless everyone involved per each and every song grants a specific waiver, he's gotta pay. Where do people get the idea that something is free just because it seems right or convenient to them?

"none of them are any good of course."

Your attitude about new or underexposed music baffles me.

OK...so not all of it sucks, but most of it does.

I get dozens of new songs every day. Almost all of them are crap. But hey, if Tom wants to give all of them a platform, fine. It will be a great experiment,

That's what I mean. SoundExchange is saying that's how they'll handle new music if an OTA right becomes law. Artists and labels view new music differently from established music.

A few points:

Tom's content won't be over the air and will be subject to online steaming performance and publishing royalties.

There's not and never has been a dispensation for songs under a year old.

50,000 songs in a row doesn't necessarily mean 50,000 different songs.

But deals get made every day. I know people who do record promotion for online radio, and they often offer waivers for new music.

They're actually doing great on day one for a Shoutcast station.
They've already hit a server peak of 302 on day one with an average TSL of over 2 hours

Just "tuned" in and the stream was immediate. Arcade Fire was playing... In red letters --- DON'T INSULT US
Ony I feel insulted hearing a MONOphonic stream!!

EDIT: OK that one cut sounded mono. It is a stereo stream... Heavy on the bass though. I am now playing the MP3 stream thru my WinAmp player.

Wow, I must say that I really like this station! It sounds great on my laptop in the kitchen and on my Tannoys in my studio. The music format is similar to Indie, but sounds much better. 8)
