Tom Leykis Planning A Comeback To Talk Radio

"... talking to some nobody band."

No doubt, this was probably a tie-in for his "New Normal Rock" channel...

Love it or hate it people, but the future of radio isn't on the radio. Most radio stations would be thrilled to have a format launch/promotion where so many people showed up they had to turn people away. That is the equivalent of yesterday's Leykis launch. I tried Tom's site (crashed), then Tunein (too much buffering) and finally Shoutcast (rock solid), but then, I've been online a few times. Obviously for those accustomed to pushing a button on the old Delco, this was too technical of a procedure to endure. However, plenty of other people did figure out how to listen and those are the people that matter, not some crusty old dinosaur yelling at the podcasters to stay off of his lawn.

I'll give Tom a lot of credit. He hit the ground running from a brand new studio with fully produced elements, advertisers and more listeners than he could handle! Sounds like a successful launch to me.

Tie-in for his "New Normal MUSIC" (indie rock) channel actually. New Normal Rock plays relatively well known bands in an active rock format.
From what I've seen on his Facebook page, premium subscriptions are currently in the hundreds (highest number I saw was around 400). With each of them paying at least $9.99 a month, this would put him near $4000 so far in revenue in the first day, just for subscriptions. This is probably enough to cover a significant portion of operating costs. By selling more subscriptions and adding in more advertisers, he shouldn't do too bad.

Does Tom have podcasts?

The reason I'm asking is he's talking about people listening in their cars with new web-based radios. My thinking is if you don't intend to call in does it really matter if the show you're listening to is live or a couple hours old.

After all, playing podcasts downloaded from WiFi is cheaper than burning 3G data. :)

BTW: I have an iPhone 3GS I got Christmas last year for 99¢. ;D

Yes he does, but not for free. That's a feature of his premium service. They'll get access to podcasts, everyone else will have to stream. Very fair pricing model, as Tom has to pay for extra server space to host podcasts.
For many people, it may be cheaper to subscribe to Tom via podcast instead of relying on their 3G data plan. I know Verizon and AT&T charge pretty hefty overages to people on tiered data plans. $10 per GB or something around that I believe.

Actually, I did some research right now on today's launch and he was running 14 different Shoutcast servers, all with 500-1,000 slots available. At 3PM, pretty much all these servers were jammed, meaning he got some great numbers in the several thousands when it came to internet listening.

So where would 7,000 to 14,000 listeners land you in the radio ratings?

...listened to the Leykis resurrection for the last couple of days. Much more interesting and entertaining than the chowderheads on KKKFI, KABullspitC or AMen 870...

Cannot disagree with you on that. Those stations just don't get it. I like Handel and J&K but everyone else there is as useless as everyone on KABC. It's supposed to be an entertainment media, not a pulpit.

Loved that Tune-In and others crashed. Seriously that is amazing for someone that has been off-the-air for three years! It speaks to the talent Tom is. Speaking of listening in the car, I plugged the smartphone into the AUX jack and he sounded fantastic and much better than a AM radio show. This is the future! Wish Tom nothing but success with his New Normal Network.

It is EXTREMELY difficult to know what to expect when it comes to anything internet related. Just think of what happens to the Apple website after a new iPhone is released. I was actually impressed that his tech team patched up most of the streaming problems by the start of the 4PM hour.
His show was pretty much the same as what you would hear on KLSX. Except for the end of the 4PM hour where he got caught up talking to some nobody band.

Very interesting. Podcasting by itself is quite simple. Broadcasting live is quite different. As you mentioned, there's always a limit to the number of active listeners. As a former LSX listener, I'll have to check it out. It sucked when the station flipped. It was non-stop listen-age from the ACE man to Tom. 8)

Speaking of data plans, a word of warning to Verizon customers. When changing plans, be careful they don't do the switch-a-roo on you. We upgraded our plan for unlimited data and messaging. Without our knowledge, they cut our available talking minutes in half. It took a battle with customer service to remove the overage charges. I said to myself, "I'll just switch to AT&T". Yea right! I could find no reference to an unlimited data plan on AT&T's website.

Now streaming radio-free-tom! It's flash your headlights Friday! Of course I can't participate until the drive home. 8)

It's all right. He's all ready claiming Flash Friday is alive and well to the tune of thousands of headlights he has seen driving into the studio today. Despite being 3 years removed from terrestrial radio and the fact daytime running lights have become even more of the norm (the new normal if you will) in most all new car models and not since KLSX flipped to KAMP. These are all Leykis fans, obviously. All listening. 4 days since returning. All of them.

The customer service representatives at AT&T and Verizon seem to be "accidentally" switching a lot of people from a grandfathered unlimited data plan to a tiered plan. Word on the street is that AT&T throttles you to under 1mbps when you pass 3GB in data usage under an unlimited plan. I have an unlimited data plan with AT&T and I've been streaming Tom all this week and I've already eaten through 200MB of data. Even at 64 kbps, it's easy to eat through data.
