My old friend Tom Perryman will be honored at this summer's TAB Convention in Austin, as "Pioneer of the Year." I've nominated him twice for this honor, and it looks like this time it worked! Tom began his long career in broadcasting in 1947 as a DJ at KEBE Jacksonville. He was the first regular DJ of an all-night country music show on the legendary WSM Nashville. He also partnered with Jim Reeves to manage KGRI-AM-FM Henderson, which is where I first met him.
In addition to his on-air shifts, he has served as engineer, newsman, sports announcer, sales manager, program director and general manager at various stations. The list of Tom’s accolades goes on and on. The Country Music DJ Hall of Fame inducted him in 1988. At the young age of 85, he is still going strong and playing classic country music at KKUS Tyler-Longview. I hope I'm doing as well when I get to 85. Congratulations Tom!
