Tom Rounds, whose radio milestones and achievements are too many to mention, passed away last night after minor surgery. In the last 25 years or so, TR had run Burbank-based Radio Express, the largest syndicator of radio programming outside the US. Prior to that, many of us remember him as the leader of the team that gave us American Top 40. But I remember him best as a friend of more than 20 years.

I remember Tom Rounds from his affiliation with KPOI-1380 in Honolulu in the early 1960's. KPOI was affiliated with K/MEN-1290 in San Bernardino and K/MAK-1340 in Fresno during that period. I once heard KPOI as a DXer from my (then) home in Riverside, CA in 1962 or 1963. I received a Reception Confirmation letter from KPOI which contained the names of the DJs at KPOI, including Tom Rounds. I also seem to remember him subbing at K/MEN a time or two.
